Primary objective
Manage the Office of the Chief Executive (CE) and provide high-level executive support and strategic and operational advice
to the CE.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high level strategic support and advice for key governance, quality assurance, risk and service management

standards and processes for the CE.
2. Coordinate and manage complex strategic projects, including initiatives arising from Cabinet and provide advice to others

about strategic projects.
3. Initiate, coordinate, research and prepare high level confidential and sensitive briefings, submissions, reports, and

correspondence on a range of strategic priorities, operational policy, and procedures.
4. Lead, manage and mentor a high performing team of executive support staff.
5. Build and sustain collaborative relationships and with a variety of stakeholders, including senior departmental staff

members, the Minister’s office and other government agencies and external stakeholders.
6. Review, develop and where appropriate, implement systems and processes to improve the effectiveness and

responsiveness of the office.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Superior oral, written, interpersonal, negotiation skills and the ability to build and maintain effective networks and

communicate with influence.
2. Politically astute with proven capability to operate effectively in a politically sensitive environment while maintaining high

standards of professionalism, ethics, departmental values, and accountability.
3. Exceptional conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills with an ability to discern sensitive issues and anticipate and

identify risk.
4. Exceptional management and coordination skills to meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment and changing and

competing priorities.
5. Ability to perform to an exceptional standard with personal resilience, reliability, integrity, and accountability.
6. Ability to implement robust monitoring and evaluation systems to identify areas for continuing improvement.
7. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Desirable
1. Bachelor level or post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
2. Knowledge and understanding of government and departmental processes, including preparing high level reports,

discussion papers and correspondence, including Ministerial and executive briefings.
3. Contemporary knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
4. Knowledge of education and training systems and the strategic directions and objectives of the Department of Education

and Training and Northern Territory Government.
