Primary objective
Responsible for planning, developing and co-ordinating strategic policy and initiatives in preventive health, including in the
healthy eating and active living portfolios.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide expert advice and assistance in healthy eating/active living program and policy development.
2. Manage specific projects relating to the research, development, implementation and evaluation of program guidelines,

standards and policies specific to healthy eating/active living, including building a local evidence-base in healthy
eating/active living.

3. Prepare, contribute to and review complex correspondence, including Ministerial briefings, memorandums of
understanding with internal and external stakeholders, service agreements and research partnership agreements.

4. Prepare concise reports and correspondence and provide input into various departmental and government reports.
5. Identify emerging Territory and national nutrition and physical activity issues in the relevant program area and initiate

appropriate actions, including undertaking any necessary research.
6. Maintain effective collaborative partnerships with government agencies and other key non-government stakeholders at

local, Territory, and national levels and represent the program and department as required.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
8. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience in program and/or policy development, research and evaluation.
2. Proven experience in the analysis and interpretation of data, formulation of detailed information, complex

correspondence and reports in plain English.
3. Sound knowledge and understanding of population health / preventive health and issues relevant to the NT context.
4. High level oral and written communications skills, including consultation, liaison, negotiation and mediation skills with a

diverse range of people including staff, clients and stakeholders from varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
5. Ability to develop and maintain networks and relationships to create effective strategic alliances and capacity to work in

effective collaborative partnerships to research, analyse and evaluate critical issues.
6. Well-developed project management, time management, research and work prioritisation skills and the ability to work

independently under limited direction and coordinate a range of activities.

Desirable
1. Qualifications and/or experience in healthy eating and active living policy and programs.
