Primary objective
The Senior Business Manager provides strategic and high-level leadership, policy advice and financial management support
to the principal and staff of the school on all corporate matters including provision of financial and human resource
management, policy implementation, streamlining of systems and processes, facilitation of services with centralised service
providers and high-level reporting and analysis.
Context statement
Gunbalanya is a remote West Arnhem Land community of about 1,300 Indigenous people, where Kunwinjku is the main
language. Gunbalanya School is an Independent Public School committed to quality education that supports students to live
confidently in two worlds. The school provides integrated services from long day care and preschool through to primary,
secondary, VET, and FAFT programs. Its Flexi School Calendar aligns learning with local cultural and seasonal activities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage the delivery of school’s administrative and support services, including supervision of a multi-disciplinary
administrative, financial, information technology, maintenance and service delivery staff.
2. Develop and implement robust and standardised systems, policies and procedures to meet corporate governance
accountabilities. This includes risk identification, budget management, business continuity planning, procurement
practices and human resources workforce planning.
3. Provide expert advice and financial analysis to support the School Board, Principal and senior staff to undertake complex
budget development, monitoring and management of income and expenditure to deliver outcomes aligned with the
school’s strategic priorities.
4. Project management and oversight of all infrastructure and facilities including minor new works, non-urgent and urgent
minor repairs, capital programs and related contracts and tenders.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Highly developed knowledge of contemporary business systems thinking frameworks and techniques. Including
development, implementation and evaluation of business systems, process and procedures for secondary schools.
2. Demonstrated strong management skills with the ability to use coaching and mentoring techniques to build the capacity
of other staff and to lead a high performing team to provide high quality, client focussed services.
3. High level knowledge of relevant legislation, frameworks, policies, policies and procedures in relation to financial and
budget administration, human resources, property management, procurement, information management, emergency
management, and other governance and management frameworks that apply in a school context.
4. Proven experience in the preparation, control, monitoring and analysis of a complex budget HR Management and
providing clear and timely advice and recommendations to inform management decisions.
5. Demonstrated effective communication and project management skills with proven ability work effectively with people
of diverse cultures, and professional backgrounds and to manage and support diverse stakeholder groups including the
school board to achieve strategic outcomes.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline; Business, Human Resource Management or similar.
2. Understanding of contemporary resource management and administrative issues for remote schools in the NT.
