What you’ll be doing

This position provides a unique stable training opportunity for an Advanced Trainee in Paediatrics to remain in one department for a 12-month period where you will obtain experience in a supervised role that incorporates acute and ambulatory patient care and neonatal special care with the provision of education and clinical research involvement. You will gain significant general Paediatric experience managing sick children in a very active metropolitan hospital.

As an Advanced Trainee you will work on a roster with two emergency trainees and two paediatric trainees who are on 3-to-6-month placements. Shifts are 10 hours with 12-hour weekends shifts covering Days, Evening and Nights with responsibilities to the ward, Special Care Nursery Birthing Unit, post-natal Ward and supporting care in the Emergency department. A planned new acute care and ambulatory clinic will provide an opportunity to develop outpatient management skills and meet the college requirement for new outpatient assessment.

The St George Hospital Paediatric team is cohesive and collaborative and provides mentorship and supervision with frequent training and educational opportunities, along with clinical teaching of Phase 2 and 3 medical students from UNSW and junior medical staff. Participation in weekly teaching and learning opportunities including journal club, grand rounds, and scenario-based training are encouraged.

There are 6 staff specialist paediatricians (3.5FTE) as well as an academic staff specialist (0.5FTE) within the department who hold accreditation with the RACP as supervisors for basic and advanced paediatric training. The paediatric department refers to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network for tertiary cases unsuitable for management locally.

Clinicians with at least 2 years of paediatric experience who are not eligible for advanced training are welcome to get in touch to discuss taking the position as an unaccredited role. We are experienced in meeting the needs of overseas trained clinicians who are assessed by the RACP as needing top up training in general paediatrics. Successful OTP applicants can apply to have the term recognised for peer review.

The paediatric department comprises a 16-bed general inpatient unit and a 12-bed level 4 special care nursery with the capacity to provide long term non-invasive ventilation and short-term invasive ventilation for babies down to 32 weeks gestation and 1.8kg birth-weight. Paediatric staff also support a separate 12-bed specialised Paediatric Emergency. St George Hospital is the high-risk obstetric unit for the Central Hospitals Network and the birthing service manages 2500 deliveries per year. There are 6 staff specialist paediatricians (3.5FTE) as well as an academic staff specialist (0.5FTE) within the department. The paediatric department refers to the Children's Hospital Network for tertiary cases unsuitable for management at St George Hospital.

Selection Criteria

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.

Career path to demonstrate advanced paediatric clinical skills development and decision making and commitment to general paediatric advanced training.

Previous experience working with children or newborns

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and technological skills sufficient for EMR

Advanced skills in neonatal and Paediatric resuscitation

Demonstrated ability to make carefully considered clinical decisions, with ability to work to a higher level of clinical responsibility.

A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to work shift work, participate in after-hours overtime, on-call rosters.
