ABOUT THE ROLE
The Health Information Services Department is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Clinical Coder to join our Clinical coding team on a full-time/part time basis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Undertake accurate clinical coding by interpreting relevant clinical information from medical records and other clinical information systems.
- Analyse and verify that the required clinical documentation is present for each inpatient episode and where appropriate, follow up/liaise with clinical staff for clarification where insufficient detail is documented.
- Assign codes within the most current standards and guidelines of the current edition of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related health problems, 10th Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) codes and perform AR-DRG grouping according to the Australian Coding Standards (ACS), State coding Authority and legislative and Health Insurance guidelines and Australian Classification of Health Interventions (ACHI) within designated timeframes.
- Reviewing the DRG allocation to ensure the DRG allocated accurately reflects the episode’s resource intensity.
- Liaise with clinicians to clarify documentation in the clinical record to assist in timely and accurate code assignment at all NSW and VIC hospitals.
- Responding to internal and external coding audits
- Identify opportunities to improve and streamline billing practices across the Group.
- Work across multiple Hospitals with a wide range of case mix.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Bachelor of HIM or the completion of HIMAA Intermediate/Advanced coding course
- Up-to-date knowledge, experience and practice using ICD-10-AM (12th edition) and understand 3M Grouper to classify patient records and evaluate the accuracy of clinical data.
- Minimum of 2 years clinical coding experience
- Strong understanding of case mix and Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs)
- Demonstrated good understanding of anatomy, physiology, diseases and pathological processes
- Ability to work effectively independently and within a small team environment.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience using Webpas/a PAS system
- Experience using Turbocoder
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite e.g. Excel
- Previous experience coding in a private hospital setting
- Sound knowledge and understanding of health fund contracts in relation to clinical coding.
