Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling (formerly VVCS) is Australia’s leading provider of high quality mental health assessment and clinical counselling services for Australian veterans and their families. Open Arms are focused on meeting client needs through a combination of proven clinical practices and new and emerging evidence-based approaches.

Open Arms is committed to the employment of Lived Experience Peer workforce as an integral component of the provision of a trauma informed, evidence based mental health service for veterans, current serving and family members. It recognises the importance of a culture where Lived Experience Peer work is supported and respected as a part of the way all mental health services are delivered. This position has been created to ensure that the Lived Experience Peer teams in the service delivery environment have appropriate leadership and career pathways. This role will work alongside clinical teams in delivering an efficacious service and will report to the Regional Director.

DUTIES

As an EL 1 Assistant Director – Lived Experience you will:

Lead and manage a Lived Experience team within a region inclusive of operational supervision and performance management of employees to ensure their ability to meet service delivery requirements.
Articulate Open Arms Model of Care, vision, procedures, frameworks, strategic and operational goals to staff and translate into practice.
Whilst working in a multidisciplinary team review complex and sensitive issues relating to clients, escalated priorities and organisational outcomes
Build the capacity of staff to undertake their roles efficiently and professionally to meet expected standards of service and quality. Identify and contribute to continuous business improvement and lead change in a constructive and collaborative manner.
Prepare complex and sensitive correspondence, reports, case notes and documentation, utilising relevant legislative and process requirements.
Monitor and drive the implementation of quality assurance relating to client engagement and satisfaction, auditing, and business support and practices.
Utilise understanding of the wider Lived Experience movement and concepts including Lived Experience-led research and training to promote contemporary, recovery-oriented, person-directed service delivery.
Ability, readiness and dedication to intentionally, safely and effectively utilise lived experience to mentor and support others in the delivery of services across a range of settings.
Embed Lived Experience values and concepts into policy and programs by actively contributing in the co-design of Open Arms projects, policies, procedures, and research initiatives.
Build stakeholder relationships based upon shared Lived Experience and support the Regional Director to maintain strategic alliances with other business areas of DVA, the Australian Defence Force, Ex-Service organisations, government agencies, and other service providers.
Ensure all Lived Experience work undertaken in the region is conducted in accordance with the governance requirements of Open Arms

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

Currently hold or ability to obtain a Working with Vulnerable People registration/Working with Children check
Currently hold or the ability to obtain and maintain a full unrestricted and valid Australian Driver's Licence
Lived experience of Australian Defence Force (ADF) service, either as an ex-ADF member, or as partner/carer of a current serving or ex-ADF member (spouse, ex-partner or widow/widower).
Personal experience, or experience of supporting someone else in mental health recovery, including an understanding and experience of accessing the mental health service sector either for yourself or for another person
Experience working in Lived Experience and/or Peer support service delivery roles

ELIGIBILITY

Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
The successful candidate will be required obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance.
