Primary objectives
The Senior Researcher provides high-quality research support to Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs),
enabling improved contributions to parliamentary processes and debates, including in Assembly committees, and
effective scrutiny of government activities and policies.
Context statement
The Department of the Legislative Assembly provides the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, its Members
and Committees with quality and timely support for the operation of the Parliament, Parliamentary Committees, the
Parliament House precinct, and Electorate Offices (and staff).
The Library and Research Services Unit, which is part of the Parliamentary Support Division, assists MLAs and
their staff to undertake their parliamentary duties by providing timely, confidential and impartial library, reference
and research services.
Key responsibilities
1. Provide comprehensive, timely and quality research and analysis on subject matter requested by MLAs, or as
otherwise directed.
2. Undertake legislative research to provide jurisdictional comparisons of legislation and regulations.
3. Prepare high level reports, discussion papers and briefing notes.
4. Develop and maintain effective relationships with relevant stakeholders at local, Territory and national levels.
5. Ensure corporate records are maintained and appropriate data is collected to generate reports on workload
and resourcing of the unit.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated highly developed written communication skills, and more than 12 months’ contemporaneous
experience in high level research, analysis and report writing.
2. Demonstrated ability to work independently, set priorities and meet deadlines under pressure.
3. Proven collaboration and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive
working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including with people from diverse
cultures.
4. Proven thorough understanding of public policy and the operation of government.
5. Demonstrated high level administrative and organisational skills, and proficiency in the creation, management
and maintenance of corporate records.
