About our Role
You are invited to join our team and be part of the evolution of our Intensive Care Unit at Prince of Wales Hospital (POW ICU). We have a renewed focus on Trainee education and welfare. With our new Head of Department, Supervisor of Training, and Medical Lead for JMO Wellbeing, we have a fresh Education Program for your CICM training needs with specific support for those sitting exams, completing Echo requirements, or preparing their Formal Project. All infused with the spirit of a Little Big Hospital in one of the most special parts of Sydney.
Prince of Wales Hospital
We think of Prince of Wales as a Little Big Hospital. We have all services available but with the warmth and friendliness of a smaller site.
We offer the full range of specialty services – think of an urgent intubated MRI overnight, immediate IR for a bleeding patient, or even ECMO. We can do it. We specialise in interventional neuroradiology, spinal cord injury, and hyperbaric medicine. We are also co-located on the Randwick Hospitals Campus with the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Royal Hospital for Women, Prince of Wales Private Hospital, and University of New South Wales. You’ll have a wealth of opportunities all together in an enviable part of Sydney between the CBD and Eastern beaches.
Our Intensive Care Unit
As an ICU Trainee, you’ll work through the POW ICU’s three pods: a 12-bed general ICU and 10-bed HDU in the new Acute Services Building, and a 12-bed hybrid Cardiothoracic/Private ICU. We are CICM accredited as a C24 training site including for neurosurgical and cardiothoracic specialty training.
You’ll see complex general surgical patients and medical patients and review the full range of medical patients in a CICM Level 3 ICU. Beyond the POW ICU, we offer a broad range of rotations. Anaesthetics, Medicine and ICU terms are available at POW while, for the rural training requirement, we rotate to Bathurst for Anaesthetics and ICU. We also rotate to the Paediatric ICU at the Sydney Children’s Hospital. You can get it all done with us.
Your Trainee Role
As a Trainee, you will rotate through the general ICU, HDU and cardiothoracic ICU on a week on / week off roster covering days and nights. On every shift you will be directly supported and supervised by either an Advanced Trainee, Transition Year trainee, or a consultant. You will receive lots of on-the-job teaching and take part in our formal Education Program.
We also offer rotations in anaesthesia, medicine, paediatrics and rural medicine to meet CICM training requirements. Many of our Trainees stay on for several years to take advantage of all training opportunities. You can enjoy an even greater focus on JMO training and welfare in 2027.
We think of our ICU at Prince of Wales Hospital as a great unit for a new Trainee to progress from an Intensive Care novice to the level of an Advanced Trainee.
Education Program
Our new Education Program contains standard scheduled teaching each week. This includes JMO-led Teaching, consultant-led Grand Rounds, POW-wide RMO teaching, in-situ simulation, Radiology teaching, and weekly M&M meetings. This is supplemented by dedicated Education Days on major ICU topics such as ventilation, cardiovascular supports, and renal replacement therapy. We have developed specific packages for those of you approaching major training milestones:
- First Part Exams: weekly study sessions, a progressive curriculum, practice written and viva questions with a College examiner.
- Second Part Exams: written, viva and hot case practice with a College Examiner, participation in the Sydney Short and Long Courses, and access to an exam-specific psychology service.
- CICM Echo requirements: a set curriculum and support to attend accredited courses, three supervisors to review cases, access to a sonographer to aid in image acquisition, help to complete the quiz, and world-expert support for more advanced TOE & 3D studies or formal post-graduate qualifications for those with a dedicated interest in Echo and USS.
- The Formal Project: led by experienced researchers, a dedicated research nurse and history of successful projects.
We run multiple courses on site including BASIC, CALS, CCAM, Intro to ECMO, and the Sydney Long Course. Our ICU includes directors of several other off-site courses. Support is available for the expense of attending these or other aspects of your training. Several of our Trainees are attending courses this year funded by the ICU. Most importantly, we tailor training to your needs. Our unit is large enough to meet CICM requirements but small enough to make it personalised, just for you.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Completion of at least three postgraduate years of medical practice, including 6 months supervised ICU experience in a CICM-accredited unit or equivalent. Registered trainee, or eligible to register, with CICM, ANZCA, ACEM or equivalent body.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
