The Paediatric Trainee (non RACP) position is available at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, for the 2027 Clinical Year, from 01 February 2027 to 06 February 2028. The primary function of the position is provision of care for patients and families at a level of skill and autonomy consistent with level of training in Paediatrics. This includes assessment of children admitted, rational use of investigations, ongoing management of care, anticipation and monitoring of progress and planning of timely discharge and appropriate follow up.

The position is designed to give those interested in pursuing 6-12 months of special skills training in paediatric medicine. This will provide an exposure to general aspects of medical care of infants, children and adolescents and will serve as a solid foundation of paediatric knowledge for use in your future specialty training. Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, along with our secondment sites, provides a very high calibre of education for all junior trainees. The position is designed to provide paediatric experience for trainees registered with colleges other than the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and includes trainees registered with the College of Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthetic Medicine or Royal College of General Practitioners. Paediatric experience will predominantly be general paediatric rotations in metropolitan paediatric units. During the contracted time trainees may be required to work in accredited facilities (including private hospitals) that are not listed as being within the Network. These facilities may be outside of NSW.

Selection Criteria:

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
Minimum of 3 years postgraduate experience with a minimum 3 months recent paediatric experience and registered with a recognised Australasian College training program (excluding RACP), demonstrating progression through training. Please provide details.
Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development. This includes demonstrated ability to teach and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff. Please provide an example.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure best patient care. Please provide an example.
Demonstrated experience in taking comprehensive patient histories, performing clinical examinations, establishing appropriate differential diagnoses, formulating management plans and accurately documenting in patient records. Please provide an example.
Ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment. Please provide an example.
Demonstrated clinical competency in procedures in paediatric patients including venepuncture, intravenous cannulation and neonatal resuscitation. Please provide an example.
Proven ability to organise, plan and manage competing tasks. Please provide an example.
