The Emergency Trainee is responsible for assessment and management of patient’s presenting to the Emergency Department; communication of assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care; communication with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations; arrangement of patient discharge process and liaison with GP’s and other community care services to ensure the provision of optimal patient care to patients presenting to St. Vincent’s Hospital.
What you'll be doing
The Emergency Trainee is responsible for the assessment and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department. This includes timely clinical decision-making, communication with senior medical staff, nursing staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team, and discussing assessment findings and management plans with patients and their families. The role also includes maintaining accurate clinical documentation, coordinating investigations and specialty consultations, and facilitating safe discharge planning in liaison with general practitioners and community-based services.
St Vincent's Hospital Sydney Emergency Department is a high-acuity tertiary referral service seeing approximately 51,000 presentations each year. Around 46% of patients presenting to the department are admitted, accounting for approximately half of all hospital admissions. The department manages a broad range of presentations across all areas of emergency medicine and provides care to a complex and diverse patient population. St Vincent’s is a designated trauma centre and provides advanced tertiary services including ECMO. The department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for the maximum duration of emergency medicine training (TS.
Emergency Advanced Trainees at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney undertake a broad range of rotations within St Vincent’s, including Emergency, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care, Drug and Alcohol, and our PANDA unit (Psychiatric and Non-prescription Drug and Alcohol). Trainees also have the opportunity to undertake a Special Skills term in Simulation and a Special Interest term in Ultrasound, including progression towards Australasian College for Emergency Medicine CCPU modules.
Additional secondment opportunities are available across a range of network and affiliated sites, including Sutherland Hospital Emergency, Sydney Children's Hospital Emergency, Canterbury Hospital Emergency and Anaesthetics, and Northern Beaches Hospital Emergency.
The department provides a comprehensive Primary Examination preparation program and individualised support for trainees preparing for the Fellowship Examinations. All trainees receive four hours of protected paid teaching each week, with a structured education program aligned to Australasian College for Emergency Medicine training requirements.
