Primary objective
To provide clinical care, under the direction and supervision of senior staff in the relevant department, to residents of Central Australia,
including the Barkly region and fringe areas of Western Australia and South Australia.
Context statement
Alice Springs Hospital is a 186-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin
University in Darwin. It is the only major hospital covering over a million square km with a strong focus on Indigenous and remote
health as a result of such a dispersed population. Over two thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal people from both town and
remote communities. Consequently, cultural, language and communication skills are an important component of our service delivery.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide safe, effective and reliable clinical care in a remote hospital environment.
2. Provide the appropriate day-to-day care of a specified caseload under the direction of senior staff in the appropriate area. This

will include responsibility for admissions and discharges and the institution and maintenance of a suitable management regime.
3. To provide a range of relevant administrative duties including discharge summaries, liaising with the General Practitioner and

communicating with relatives.
4. Be available for secondment at other Territory Health Services for short periods as the need arises at the discretion of the

Executive Director of Medical and Clinical Services.
5. Participate in quality management, peer review and ongoing personal medical education programs; participate in education

programs for medical students.
6. To undertake other activities as the need arises, in particular to provide assistance in the Emergency Department, at the discretion

and under the direction of the Executive Director of Medical and Clinical Services. This would include participation in after hour’s
duties as required for the adequate functioning and staffing of the hospital.

7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Satisfactory completion of Internship including at least 10 weeks in each of Medicine and Surgery, and 8 weeks in Emergency

medicine.
3. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
4. Good verbal and written communication skills
5. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures and to work in a cross cultural environment
6. A commitment to professional development including self-directed learning
7. Practices Medicine in accordance with the Medical Board of Australia’s code of conduct “Good Medical Practice: a code of conduct

for Doctors in Australia”

6. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures and to work in a cross cultural environment
7. A commitment to professional development including self-directed learning
8. Practices Medicine in accordance with the Medical Board of Australia’s code of conduct “Good Medical Practice: a code of conduct
