About the Role

Formed in 1882, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) is a major metropolitan tertiary referral hospital and a principal provider of specialist healthcare. It remains one of the nation’s most respected hospitals, with a distinguished history serving the health needs of local, statewide, national and international communities.

The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Australia Brain Bank was established in 2008 and is supported through a strategic partnership between MS Australia, the Sydney Local Health District and the University of Sydney. The MS Australia Brain Bank’s main objective is to co-ordinate the collection, perform tissue characterisation, maintain storage of and fulfil requests for the use of human post mortem CNS tissues and materials from people with MS and controls to help facilitate and accelerate world class, ethically approved and scientifically credible research into better treatments, diagnoses and hopefully one day a cure for MS.

The MS Australia Brain Bank has over 800 individuals currently consented to brain donation and facilitates up to 10-20 brain donations each year. Enquiries and requests for well characterised MS tissues are received from researchers and scientist from across the globe which is administered and fulfilled by the MS Australia Brain Bank. The primary purpose of this position is to assist the RPA Department of Neuropathology to perform its laboratory-based work, specifically as it relates to the MS Australia Brain Banking activities.

The position is focused on performing laboratory based duties for the successful running and operation of the core brain banking activities of the MS Australia Brian Bank (i.e. collection, processing, characterisation, storage and distribution of brain banked tissues) that includes histological and basic molecular procedures, including accessioning specimens, assisting pathologists and the brain bank manager in specimen cutup, routine tissue embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, immunohistochemical staining, cryostat sectioning, macro-photography and micro-photography, large tissue sectioning, DNA extraction, fulfilment of tissue requests, backup duties such as retrieval/filing of slides and paraffin blocks, maintenance, storage and disposal of histology specimens, and other general laboratory duties.

The role includes supporting laboratory aspects of brain banking, along with other related laboratory requirements. This position is likely to be extended beyond the contract end date, subject to finalisation of the funding agreement with MS Australia.

Ideal Candidate

Possess the pathology techniques associate diploma, science degree, or equivalent qualification.
Experience in routine histological techniques such as microtomy, routine and special staining, tissue embedding techniques, and histopathological cut-up techniques.
Good understanding of infection control and Work Health and Safety procedures in a Histology laboratory.
