Vascular Surgery, Trainee Unaccredited Position, Nepean Hospital

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (01-Feb-2027 up to 2 years)

At Nepean Hospital there is a dedicated team responsible for management of all patients with acute vascular surgical conditions within the hospital itself as well as the neighbouring hospitals with the NBMLHD. The vascular surgical department manages all acute vascular surgical admissions.

As a Trainee within the Network the JMO will largely complete the entire rotation at Nepean Hospital although occasional secondment to other surrounding facilities may be possible if considered beneficial for training, including Blue Mountains Hospital.

What you'll be doing

Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in the Unit, and ensuring that the admission and plans are documented in the medical record
Coordinating and documenting the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to his/her Unit within the public health organisation.
Day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in the Unit under supervision of the consultant in charge/fellow
Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate, arranging discharge and liaising with local medical officers and other community based care modalities.
Participating in the afterhours and on-call roster.

Where you'll be working

Unaccredited Trainees in Vascular Surgery will work in the vascular surgical department at Nepean Hospital.
Trainees will perform the function of providing on call services to the unit at all time. On call commitments will be divided evenly amongst the trainees.
The Vascular surgical unit runs 4 dedicated operating theatres a week along with emergency sessions. There is ample opportunity to attend operating theatre to assist with operations.

Nepean Unaccredited Trainee Network provides:

Mentoring, supervision, and career guidance from Network Supervisors of Training, Hospital Surgeons, Postgraduate Surgical Fellows and RACS appointed SET Trainees.
PGY3+ training positions that provide exposure to surgical terms that gives them the opportunity to develop surgical skills and competencies set out by the RACS to facilitate selection to the Surgical Education Training Program (SET) in vascular surgery.
Opportunity to gain expose to a range of training programs including workshops and professional development sessions, as well as clinical research opportunities.

Essential requirements

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
Applicants who are not currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia must meet English language skills registration standard (medical) and attach evidence of this to their application.
At least three years' postgraduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent).
Recent relevant clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

Selection criteria

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.

Sufficient skills, knowledge and experience to practice as a safe and competent vascular surgery trainee. Also demonstrates a commitment to progress in vascular training.

Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.

Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.

Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.

Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
