The business delivers a broad range of telecommunications services within its construction projects, including NBN infrastructure, structured cabling, switchboard installation, data transmission systems, smart home cabling, and aerial and underground network works. With a growing residential construction pipeline and increasing client demand for connected, technology-ready homes, the business is seeking an experienced Telecommunications Technician to support its ongoing in-house telecommunications installation and maintenance operations across all residential construction projects.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Telecommunications Technician (ANZSCO: 342414) to join our team in Quakers Hill, New South Wales on a full-time, permanent basis. In this role, you will be responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and fault diagnosis of telecommunications infrastructure across new residential builds delivered by the business. You will play a key role in ensuring all homes are NBN-ready and communications-ready prior to handover, and in supporting the business's growing range of smart home and structured cabling offerings across its residential construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine drawings, specifications, and work areas to determine positioning and connections for telecommunications equipment, and install conduits, pits, and cable pathways prior to wall linings being completed at the relevant stage of construction.
- Install structured cabling systems including Cat6 and Cat6A data cabling, telephone cabling, and coaxial cabling to wall outlets, patch panels, and distribution frames throughout new residential builds.
- Install NBN-ready infrastructure in new residential dwellings including lead-in conduits, network termination devices, and internal distribution cabling in accordance with NBN Co standards and specifications.
- Install communications cabinets, patch panels, network termination equipment, and distribution frames within new residential dwellings.
- Install TV antenna cabling, coaxial outlets, and associated aerial distribution systems across residential construction sites, joining cables and sealing sheaths as required.
- Install structured cabling infrastructure to support Wi-Fi access points and multi-room networking systems as part of the business's standard and premium residential build packages.
- Locate and diagnose faults in telecommunications equipment and systems using instruments such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters, and transmission measuring equipment.
- Adjust, replace, and repair faulty telecommunications components and conduct post-repair testing using electronic instruments to verify system performance and compliance with specifications.
- Test and certify all structured cabling installations prior to handover, verifying network connectivity, signal performance, and compliance with Australian Standards and NBN Co requirements.
- Attend post-construction warranty call-outs relating to telecommunications and communications infrastructure, diagnose faults, and carry out rectification works as required.
- Coordinate with NBN technicians, internet service providers, and other trades on site to ensure telecommunications infrastructure is completed at the correct construction stage and ready for service connection prior to handover.
- Maintain accurate records of installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and repair activities including job cards, service reports, and technical documentation.
- Comply with workplace health and safety requirements, relevant Australian telecommunications standards, ACMA regulations, and all applicable regulatory obligations.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Qualification and Employment:
A relevant AQF Certificate III qualification including at least two years of on-the-job training, or an AQF Certificate IV in Telecommunications or a related trade discipline. At least three years of relevant experience and/or relevant vendor certification may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
A minimum of one (1) year of relevant full-time experience as a Telecommunications Technician or in a closely related telecommunications trade role.
Required Skills and Attributes
- Demonstrated experience in the installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications equipment, structured cabling systems, and associated infrastructure.
- Experience installing structured cabling systems including Cat6 and Cat6A data cabling, NBN infrastructure, and communications systems in residential or commercial construction environments.
- Proficiency in fault diagnosis using telecommunications test instruments including ohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters, and transmission measuring equipment.
- Familiarity with NBN Co standards, Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) regulations, and relevant Australian Standards applicable to telecommunications installations in residential buildings.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, building plans, specifications, wiring diagrams, and work area plans accurately.
- Experience installing smart home systems including security cameras, video intercoms, home automation, and multi-room networking infrastructure is highly regarded.
- Sound understanding of workplace health and safety obligations and compliance with relevant Australian telecommunications standards and regulatory requirements.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and efficiently across multiple construction sites.
- Good communication and organisational skills with the ability to liaise effectively with clients, contractors, NBN technicians, and other trades on site.
- Must hold a valid driver's licence and have access to a reliable vehicle.
