Purpose of the Role

The School Nurse/First Aid Officer manages the physical health and wellbeing of students and the broader College
community, aligned with ELTHAM College’s philosophy. This role maintains health programs and procedures that
meet professional, legal, and compliance requirements.

This role will administer first aid and manage medical situations for children aged 3 to 18 years and ELTHAM
College staff and visitors as needed.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Promotes and protects the optimal health and wellbeing of students and staff

Provide effective initial treatment for conditions ranging from minor injuries (cuts, abrasions, soft tissue

injuries, fractures, wound care, minor bleeding) to emergency medical situations (trauma, severe
bleeding, asthma attacks).

Establish and implement Health Support Plans for students with specific medical conditions, including

anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy.

Documentation of all treatments, procedure, or interaction in the student’s health record for clear

communication, continuity of care, and legal protection

Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and standards for health care delivery.

Liaise with families as required.

Develops and implements student health care plans

Monitor student medication and health support plans, ensuring they are updated regularly.

Maintain comprehensive, current health information for all students and communicate relevant details to

staff.

Follow up with families about medical information as needed.

Prepare annual Student Health Support Plans for Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes, and Epilepsy.

Request emergency Action Plans annually or as needed from student families

Collaborate with administration during enrolment to ensure accurate health records.

Liaise with parents and medical professionals to support students in accessing the full school program.

Responsibility for Health Centre management

Record and monitor attendance at the Health Centre for students and staff.

Maintain statistical databases, including visit numbers, demographics, and referral patterns.

Ensure adequate first aid supplies across the College campuses.

Ensure first aid kits are stocked to meet general and individual student needs.

Maintain scheduled medication for specific students.

Monitor student and staff health as needed

Communicable Conditions and Preventative Programs

Liaise with Banyule Immunisation Service to coordinate immunisation programs for year 7 & 10.

Notification to Department of Health or Local Public Health Units (LPHUs) during notifiable disease or

illness outbreaks.

Support and promote the SunSmart policy.

Responsibility for compliance with documentation, legislative and policy requirements

Stay current with all legislative, compliance, and guideline requirements affecting the College.

Review and update policies and procedures to maintain compliance.

Develop new policies and processes as needed.

Maintain accurate treatment records for reporting and WorkCover/OH&S purposes.

Participate in OH&S committee meetings.

Support risk management and health and safety practices.

Complete incident reports for students and staff.

Other

Check all student medical forms prior to camps and excursions, ensuring appropriate medication and first

aid supplies available for specific student needs.

Ensure all relevant medical information is communicated to staff attending camps.

Provide staff in-service training on medical needs and conditions, including for Outdoor Education and

Sport.

Attend Student Services Referral meetings and provide professional input.

Present twice yearly staff anaphylaxis briefing

Selection Criteria

Experience

Demonstrated experience administering first aid, emergency response and assessing medical situations

with appropriate escalation.

Background in Paediatric, Adolescent, Community Health, or similar.

Previous School Nursing or First Aid Officer Experience is highly regarded

Skills and Attributes

Flexible, adaptable approach to daily demands with strong multitasking and prioritisation abilities.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with students, staff, and

families.

Strict adherence to confidentiality and professional conduct.

Demonstrated knowledge of child safe practices including reporting requirements.

Qualifications and Employer Requirements

Tertiary qualifications in Nursing or Certificate in First Aid HLTAID011.

Evidence of ongoing professional development.

Current CPR certification (updated annually).

Course in Verifying the Correct Use of Adrenaline Injector Devices 22579VIC.

First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis 22578VIC.

22556VIC Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace.

Clearance to work with children - Current Working with Children’s Check (WWCC).
Completion of Protecting Children – Mandatory Reporting and Other obligations (training provided by

DoE Victoria) as required – accessed via ELTHAM College

National Police Check (within the last 6 months)
