About the Role:
Are you a strong Database Engineer looking to make the leap into Data Engineering?
At ELMO, we are reimagining what’s possible by building an AI-Native data platform. We are looking for a Junior-to-Mid level Database Engineer who already understands the fundamentals of data structures, possesses hands-on experience with Snowflake and Kafka, and is eager to upskill into a fully-fledged Data Engineer.
You will join our R&D team in Sydney, working alongside Data Architects, MLOps/AI Engineers, and Platform teams. Under the mentorship of senior engineers, you will learn to build, scale, and secure batch and streaming pipelines using cutting-edge AI orchestration tools (like Claude Code and agentic pipelines).
What You’ll Do:
As you transition into this Data Engineering role, you will gradually take ownership of the reliability and delivery of ELMO’s data platform. Your core responsibilities will include:
•
Pipeline & Transformation Development: Learn to build and own pipeline code, dbt models, and advanced SQL transformations across our multi-tenant SaaS platform.
•
Streaming & Event-Driven Architecture: Work closely with the Data Architect to design new Kafka topics, consumer group configurations, and Change Data Capture (CDC) patterns.
•
AI-Assisted Engineering: Direct AI agents for schema migrations, pipeline refactors, and test suite generation, while learning to catch subtle data integrity, performance, and cost issues in AI-generated code.
•
Data Observability & Quality: Learn to implement data quality frameworks, write contract tests, and manage data isolation patterns (RLS and masking).
•
Cloud Cost Optimization: Monitor and deliver measurable Snowflake and AWS spend reductions across team services.
•
Security & Compliance: Participate in ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 compliance workflows to ensure security remains foundational to our AI workloads.
What You Bring:
We are looking for someone with a rock-solid foundation in database management who is highly motivated to learn cloud data warehousing and event streaming pipelines.
Key: Requirements:
•
Experience: 2–4 years of experience in Database Engineering, Database Administration, or a heavily data-centric engineering role.
•
Snowflake Knowledge: Hands-on experience with Snowflake basics (schema design, query writing, and basic optimization).
•
Streaming Exposure: Practical experience or exposure to Apache Kafka (understanding topics, producers/consumers, or basic event patterns).
•
SQL & Database Mastery: Proficient in advanced SQL, with working knowledge of relational database administration (e.g., MySQL schema design, query tuning).
•
Scripting: Competency in Python for scripting, basic automation, or data manipulation.
Preferred Experience:
•
Familiarity with dbt (models, tests) or workflow orchestration tools like Apache Airflow or AWS Glue.
•
An interest in or exposure to AWS data services (S3, Lambda, Kinesis) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
•
Experience or strong interest in leveraging AI tools / coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) to accelerate development.
