## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Materials Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development, evaluation, and application of engineering materials across a range of projects. In this role, you will apply your technical expertise to investigate the properties and performance of metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, and other advanced materials, translating findings into practical engineering and commercial outcomes. You will work collaboratively with design, production, and procurement teams to ensure that material selections meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and cost-efficiency. The ideal candidate is analytically minded, detail-oriented, and passionate about innovation in materials science and engineering.
## Key Responsibilities
- Review engineering plans and design specifications for new products, assessing and recommending appropriate materials based on factors including mechanical strength, thermal performance, weight, durability, and cost considerations.
- Plan, establish, and oversee laboratory operations to research and develop new materials and fabrication techniques, ensuring outcomes align with production performance standards and commercial targets.
- Liaise with materials producers, suppliers, and manufacturers — including those specialising in metals, ceramics, polymers, cements, and elastomers — to evaluate the suitability of materials for specific product or project applications.
- Investigate product and component failures by analysing failure data, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing targeted laboratory testing to identify causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain materials testing programmes, interpreting results to provide technical guidance on material selection, processing methods, and quality assurance requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, design, and manufacturing teams to integrate material considerations into the full product development lifecycle, from concept through to production.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, material specifications, and documentation to support project decision-making, regulatory compliance, and client deliverables.
- Monitor developments in materials science and emerging technologies, identifying opportunities to apply new materials or processes that improve product performance or reduce costs.
- Ensure all materials engineering activities comply with relevant Australian and international standards, workplace health and safety regulations, and industry best practice.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by assessing existing materials and processes, identifying inefficiencies, and recommending enhancements to improve quality and operational outcomes.
- Assist in the specification and procurement of materials, providing technical input to sourcing decisions and working with procurement teams to evaluate supplier capabilities and material certifications.
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in a materials engineering role, with a sound understanding of the properties and behaviour of metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, or other engineering materials.
- Proficiency in materials testing, characterisation techniques, and the interpretation of test data, including mechanical, thermal, and chemical analysis methods.
- Experience with failure analysis methodologies and the ability to translate findings into actionable engineering recommendations.
- Strong understanding of Australian and international materials standards and relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Proficiency in engineering software and tools relevant to materials analysis and documentation.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with high attention to detail and the ability to assess complex technical information accurately.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical reports and present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritise workloads effectively, and meet deadlines in a dynamic engineering environment.
- Eligible to work in Australia with no restrictions.
## Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualifications in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status with Engineers Australia, or progress towards chartership.
- Experience in a relevant industry sector such as mining, construction, defence, aerospace, automotive, or advanced manufacturing.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) software or other computational modelling tools used in materials and structural assessment.
- Knowledge of sustainable materials practices, lifecycle assessment, or circular economy principles as applied to engineering materials.
- Experience working with composite materials, additive manufacturing processes, or surface engineering technologies.
- Exposure to quality management systems such as ISO 9001 or industry-specific quality frameworks.
## Why Join Us?
- Be part of a collaborative and forward-thinking engineering team that values innovation, technical excellence, and continuous professional growth.
- Access ongoing learning and development opportunities, including support for chartership, postgraduate study, and attendance at industry conferences and technical seminars.
- Enjoy a flexible working environment that supports work-life balance, including hybrid arrangements where project requirements allow.
- Contribute to meaningful, high-impact projects across diverse industry sectors that make a tangible difference to communities and industries across Australia.
- Competitive remuneration package with additional benefits, a supportive team culture, and genuine opportunities for career progression within a growing organisation.
