The Australian Space Agency was established on 1 July 2018 to coordinate civil space matters across government and support the growth and transformation of Australia’s space industry. Our strategic vision for the Australian space sector is a globally responsible and respected sector that lifts the broader economy and inspires and improves the lives of Australians.
The Agency’s National Space Safety Office ensures that civil uses of space are safe, secure and uphold the national interest. The Office develops, maintains and implements a fit-for-purpose regulatory framework that adapts to current and emerging space activities complemented by space monitoring functions to provide situational awareness of space objects and events. The office engages extensively to ensure the regulatory and monitoring practices are aligned with national and international norms, guidelines and treaty obligations.
The Space Monitoring team delivers and operates systems that monitor space objects and events relevant to Australia’s interests. The team works across engineering, operations and external engagement, integrating data, technology and analysis to provide timely, reliable advice and reporting about space events relevant to Australian government stakeholders. The work involves close collaboration with industry, academia and domestic and international government partners.
We are seeking a Senior Space Monitoring Officer (APS6) to play a key role in shaping and delivering Australia’s space monitoring capability, contributing to responsible utilisation of space. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of strategy, operations and analysis, contributing to nationally significant outcomes in a rapidly evolving international environment.

In this role you will contribute to meaningful national outcomes, work with leading experts across government, industry and academia, and build your expertise in space monitoring, data analysis and strategic policy. You will gain experience operating and improving monitoring systems, engaging nationally and internationally, and influencing the future development of Australia’s space monitoring capability.

You will have a strong understanding of space activities and be able to translate complex space scenarios into clear, practical advice for a wide range of stakeholders. As the Senior Space Monitoring Officer, you will:

Support the development and implementation of strategic space monitoring initiatives.

Utilise monitoring systems to provide situational awareness of Australian space objects and relevant space events.

Undertake deeper analysis to identify trends and provide data-driven insights.

Improve space monitoring processes, procedures and data analysis systems.

Contribute to understanding legislation, regulations, international treaty obligations and guidance relevant to space monitoring.

Analyse national and international space monitoring capabilities.

Engage with national and international stakeholders on shared space monitoring interests.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate qualifications in Science, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering or a relevant equivalent.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
This position requires a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
There are many policy, strategy, development, operational and engagement aspects to the Space Monitoring program, requiring team members to be flexible, versatile and multi-skilled. Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following will be highly valued for this role:

Understanding of space operations

Understanding of space treaties, legislation and policy

Experience in design and implementation of space-related policy and/or strategy

Experience in data analysis to support monitoring of space operations

Experience in engagement of research and technology sectors
