About the Branch
The Operations Branch is the manufacturing arm of the Mint. It is an operationally focused, multi-disciplinary team, responsible for the manufacture of both Australian and foreign circulating coin, collectable coins, and tooling to support those production requirements. The branch covers, coin manufacture, die preparation, blank preparation, electro plating and chemical processing, tooling and machining services, planning and packing.
In addition to meeting production targets, the branch has a strong focus on safety, continuous improvement, and quality. The Operations branch is currently embarking on a large program of uplift initiatives, providing a great opportunity for enthusiastic leaders to contribute to meaningful change and development.
About the Role
The Maintenance Supervisor – Wet Chemistry plays a key role in supporting the production of proof blanks, heat treatment, electroplating, and wastewater treatment processes. The role also contributes to the manufacture of circulating, numismatic, and investor coins, as well as medals, medallions, and colour printed products for both Australian and international clients using precision, high speed minting equipment.
This position can support tool setting activities, assisting with routine maintenance, repairs, and continuous improvement tasks, and performing diagnostics and corrective actions during unplanned equipment breakdowns.
The role may participate in a flexible on call roster to provide after hours support for urgent maintenance requirements. This includes responding to breakdowns, conducting fault finding, and ensuring essential services and equipment remain operational outside standard working hours.
The Duties
1. Managing the setup, adjustment and ongoing maintenance of a wide range of plant and equipment, including electrical, mechanical and electro mechanical systems. This involves performing preventative and corrective maintenance, conducting inspections, and ensuring all machinery operates safely, efficiently and in accordance with technical specifications and organisational standards.
2. Supervising, guiding and developing maintenance staff, including apprentices and less experienced team members. This includes setting work priorities, providing on the job training, mentoring, reinforcing safe work practices and supporting the development of technical competency within the team.
3. Undertaking a variety of trade tasks across electrical and/or mechanical disciplines, such as machining, assembly, installation, wiring, troubleshooting and repair of components and systems. This work requires the use of specialised tools, interpretation of technical drawings and adherence to established trade practices to ensure high quality workmanship.
4. Diagnosing and resolving equipment faults using systematic problem solving techniques, including identifying root causes, implementing effective solutions and providing technical advice to support the safe and reliable operation of plant and equipment.
5. Using computerised maintenance management systems to record work activities, update asset histories and maintain accurate service documentation.
6. Contributing to risk management processes by assisting in the development and review of Safe Work Method Statements, risk assessments and other safety documentation.
7. Supervising contractors engaged in maintenance activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project requirements and organisational standards.
8. Contributing to project management tasks, including planning, scheduling and coordinating small scale projects, upgrades or improvement initiatives.
Qualification
A relevant trade qualification in either mechanical or electrical would be essential.
Secuirty
This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
