The Provisional Fellow position in Academic Medicine at The Children’s Hospital Westmead is available for the 2027 Clinical Year, from 01 February 2027 to 06 February 2028. The provides Advanced Trainees an opportunity to further their training, developing skills important for a consultant role in the spheres of clinical care, education and training as well as research with support from the team consultants and other health care professionals. The Provisional Fellow role is a leadership role, both within the department for other junior medical staff and medical students as well as members of the multidisciplinary team, but also across the broader hospital community.
The primary focus of the position will be to contribute to medical education for Junior Medical Officers at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and medical students in the Sydney Medical Program (University of Sydney) through two complementary positions with SCHN and University of Sydney combined as the Medical Education Fellow. There is opportunity for a clinical component, usually in outpatient care as well as participation in medical education (or other) research.
The main purpose of the position will be to:
Develop skills as a medical educator
Provide training in medical education as preparation for a career in academic paediatric medicine or surgery.
Develop proficiency in clinical and medical education research and provide a framework for future leadership positions in paediatric medicine (e.g. paediatric education).
Provide effective service to paediatric patients with increasing autonomy, while developing expertise in medical/surgical practice, in a complex clinical environment.
Assist in ensuring that the service provided to patients and their families in New South Wales and beyond is of the highest quality, sustainable, flexible and transparent.
Develop clinical proficiency in the care of children with complex health problems
Aid in the education and development of Junior Medical Staff.

Selection Criteria:

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.

Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) as an advanced trainee or equivalent. Those registered with the RACP, must have preferably completed a minimum 6 months as an advanced trainee with RACP (or equivalent) at commencement of Fellowship.

6 months experience in relevant subspecialty or equivalent. Please detail relevant experience.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

Excellent communication, leadership and teamwork skills with demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.

Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, with a willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.

Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal.

Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent time management, problem solving skills, clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
