The Role
We are seeking an experienced IP Network Engineer (Cisco/Nokia BNG SME) to join a high-performing Network Engineering team supporting a major telecommunications customer delivering large-scale broadband and IP network initiatives.
This role will focus on the testing, validation, design assurance, and implementation of Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) solutions across Cisco and Nokia environments. You will work closely with network architects, engineering teams, operations teams, and vendors to ensure robust, scalable, and production-ready network deployments.
This opportunity is ideally suited to a hands-on network professional with deep expertise in BNG technologies, subscriber management, network automation, and carrier-grade service provider environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct testing, validation, and certification of Cisco and Nokia BNG configurations, software releases, and network services
- Review and validate BNG designs and architecture documentation to ensure scalability, performance, and compliance with network standards
- Support deployment and implementation activities, including configuration, integration, migration, and acceptance testing
- Develop and execute test plans, test cases, and automation frameworks to validate network functionality and performance
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and operations teams throughout project delivery and production readiness activities
- Perform performance benchmarking and traffic testing using tools such as Ixia, Spirent, or equivalent platforms
- Utilise NetConf, YANG, Cisco NSO, Ansible, and related automation technologies to streamline configuration validation and regression testing
- Troubleshoot complex network issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
- Produce technical documentation, test reports, implementation records, and readiness sign-off documentation
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across network engineering, testing, and automation processes
What You'll Need
- Minimum 3+ years' hands-on experience working with Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) platforms including Cisco ASR9K, Nokia 7750, or equivalent technologies
- 7+ years' experience within IP Networking environments
- Strong understanding of subscriber management technologies including DHCP, PPPoE, IPoE, QoS, Policy Control, and Multicast services
- Hands-on experience with Cisco IOS-XR and/or Nokia SR OS operating environments
- Experience using network testing and traffic generation tools such as Ixia, Spirent, or comparable platforms
- Working knowledge of automation technologies including NetConf, YANG, Cisco NSO, Ansible, and Python
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills within complex carrier-grade network environments
- Experience conducting design reviews, configuration audits, validation testing, and network readiness assessments
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to work effectively within cross-functional engineering and operations teams
Desirable Experience
- Cisco CCNP, CCIE, Nokia NRS II, or equivalent industry certifications
- Experience with BNG virtualisation technologies and cloud-native networking platforms
- Knowledge of emerging technologies including Segment Routing v6 (SRv6)
- Previous experience within Optus or other Tier-1 telecommunications service providers
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, and automated testing frameworks
- Experience supporting large-scale network transformation or modernisation programs
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
- Relevant Cisco, Nokia, or Service Provider networking certifications highly regarded
- Demonstrated experience delivering and validating carrier-grade network solutions
- Strong technical documentation, testing, and implementation capabilities
- Ability to work autonomously while contributing to collaborative engineering teams
