Primary objective
Lead and supervise a team of staff responsible for the delivery of case coordination, therapeutic and trauma informed programs,
interventions and throughcare or targeted cultural support services, to support young people in detention and enhance their successful
re-integration into the community post release. Develop a culture of practice excellence through ongoing quality improvement activities
and carry a small caseload when required.

Context statement
Youth Detention Support Services (YDSS), located in the Holtze Youth Detention Centre (HYDC), is responsible for the development and
delivery of many of the programs and support services that are essential to reduce recidivism and support reintegration.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Maintain comprehensive and accurate care related records and familiarity with the various information and records management

systems likely to be used in the context of the activities being undertaken in the job.
2. Embed culturally safe and culturally responsive practice in service delivery by working collaboratively with young people, families,

Aboriginal staff, community representatives and key stakeholders to build capability, strengthen engagement and support improved
outcomes.

3. Apply knowledge of Aboriginal culture, family and community structures, and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal young people
in the Northern Territory youth detention system to inform culturally responsive assessment, planning, service delivery and
reintegration support.

4. Apply relevant legislation, policy frameworks and best practice to support lawful, ethical and accountable service delivery, including
requirements relating to youth justice, child protection, domestic, family and sexual violence prevention, NT Public Sector employment
and procurement.

5. Build and maintain productive working relationships by applying contemporary relationship management, conflict resolution,
negotiation, problem solving and resource management techniques to resolve issues, manage competing priorities and achieve agreed
outcomes.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Highly developed, culturally appropriate and respectful oral and written skills demonstrated by the ability to apply culturally sensitive

communication in all dealings with for people from Aboriginal and other culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
2. High level interpersonal skills demonstrated by track record of successfully using these to develop enduring professional networks and

partnerships to enhance cross-sector collaboration; work constructively within culturally diverse settings; consult, advise, influence
and engage a diverse range of stakeholders using a variety of tools; negotiate outcomes; and apply tack, sensitivity, and diplomacy
when resolving conflict.

3. Advanced skills, expertise and knowledge and understanding of contemporary case work and practice models and methods to
undertake assessments and develop complex formulations, behavioural support strategies and treatment plans; and make judgements
on complex and sensitive issues.

4. Demonstrated effective writing skills to produce high quality assessments, throughcare plans and case management and / or care
coordination records, court reports, departmental reports, and other quality documents relevant to role.

5. Demonstrated well developed analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify solutions to complex, sensitive or time
critical issues, reinforced by the ability to be decisive and flexible while maintaining impartiality, objectivity and professionalism.

6. Demonstrated leadership abilities to provide effective direct line-supervision, supportive, educative and administrative coaching and
mentorship, and professional development opportunities to staff within a complex service delivery environment.

Desirable
1. Degree in Social Work, or Psychology, or other related discipline.
