The Mental Health Casual Administration Pool provides an exciting opportunity to work across a diverse range of mental health settings throughout the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter Valley areas. As a Casual Administration Officer, you will have the opportunity to work across acute inpatient units, community services and support teams, gaining valuable experience across a broad range of administrative roles within Mental Health Services.
The casual pool supports more than 20 different administrative roles and provides relief for permanent administration staff, including planned leave and unexpected short-notice absences. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, learning new skills and working in a dynamic environment.
About the role
As a member of the Mental Health Casual Administration Pool, you will provide high-quality administrative and customer service support across a range of clinical and corporate environments.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing professional and responsive customer service as a first point of contact, both face-to-face and by telephone.
- Responding to email enquiries, updating client contact details and completing billing processes.
- Using electronic medical record and corporate IT systems to maintain accurate documentation and correspondence.
- Providing administrative support to clinical and non-clinical staff to ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of services, including ordering and invoicing.
- Maintaining accurate and well-organised filing and record management systems in accordance with privacy and confidentiality requirements.
- Prioritising workloads effectively and completing tasks with a high level of accuracy.
- Adapting quickly to different work environments, systems, processes and administrative requirements.
This is more than a casual administration opportunity; it is a chance to build a diverse range of skills and experience across Mental Health Services within Hunter New England Local Health District. You will work alongside experienced teams, develop your administrative capabilities and gain exposure to a variety of clinical and community-based environments.
About you
We are looking for enthusiastic and adaptable administration professionals who are committed to developing their skills and contributing to the Mental Health Casual Administration Pool for a minimum of 12 months.
This role would suit someone who enjoys variety, embraces new challenges and is motivated to learn. You will have the opportunity to develop strong core administrative skills while building your ability to solve problems, manage competing priorities, resolve conflicts and respond positively to constructive feedback.

- An understanding of the nature of casual employment, including flexibility with rostered hours and availability for blocks of work.
- An understanding of the challenges and sensitivities associated with working in an acute mental health environment.
Previous experience working within Mental Health Services is not essential. However, an understanding of the unique challenges associated with working in an acute mental health setting is important.
Training and support
We recognise that our Casual Administration Pool is an investment in our people. Successful candidates will receive extensive training and support to help them confidently transition between different placements.
Your training will include:
- Mandatory NSW Health and corporate training.
- Online training for the required clinical and corporate IT systems.
- Face-to-face and on-the-job training.
- A buddy system to support you as you learn each new role.
- Well-documented processes, procedures and guides to assist you when transitioning between placements.
With more than 20 different administrative roles supported by the casual pool, you will have the opportunity to continually broaden your skills and experience while being supported throughout your development.
