Primary objective
To provide portfolio Ministers, the NT Government and its Authorities and Instrumentalities with high quality legal and policy advice.
Context statement
The Legislation and Legal Policy Unit provides strategic legal and justice related policy advice to government. Legislation and Legal Policy
develops, reviews and implements legislative change across criminal, civil and regulatory laws in the portfolio of the Attorney-General,
advises the Attorney-General, other Ministers as relevant and the Government on policy, legal and justice measures and provides
ministerial support as necessary to the Attorney-General to enable the Minister to undertake their functions and administrative
responsibilities. This position will be required to provide high quality legal and policy advice across the portfolio with a particular focus on
criminal law.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide expert, timely, efficient and accurate legal and policy advice through the Director and Executive leadership.
2. Participate in the development of legal policy and in policy coordination and assist in the development of current and emerging local

and national policy initiatives.
3. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare and present cabinet submissions, ministerials, briefing papers, reports

and other correspondence.
4. Supervise legal staff to ensure that work is conducted in a timely, efficient and professional way, and report on the progress.
5. Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
6. Organise work to manage priorities (personal and of supervised staff) effectively and meet deadlines.
7. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced personally and by supervised staff.
8. Represent the Department, liaise with clients, facilitate and maintain effective partnerships with government and stakeholders, and

deal with people and issues in a professional manner.
9. Support the monitoring and reviewing of relevant legislation and maintenance of the legislative amendment process.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
2. Extensive high-level experience and knowledge in the practice of law in relevant fields.
3. Proven experience in the organisation and management of a personal legal practice involving major and complex matters, including

policy projects.
4. Highly developed conceptual, analytical and collaborative skills to manage a wide range of organisational issues and in researching

and evaluating issues, defining options and preparing recommendations for scrutiny at the Executive, Ministerial and Government
level.

5. Extensive experience in negotiating effectively and communicating in a professional manner at high levels.
6. Extensive experience in managing projects and workload to meet client needs and deadlines, to cope with pressure and to work as

part of a team.
7. Excellent ability to be politically astute and sensitive in the provision of legal policy advice while maintaining the highest standards of

ethics and accountability.
Desirable
1. Experience using knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of government and the development of legal policy in a practical

way.
2. Experience in a position involved with the supervision and development of junior legal staff.
3. Experience with strategic project management.
