Full Job Description

EAST AVENUE ESPRESSO CAFE operates in Oatley in Southern Sydney and is well-known for its warm atmosphere and welcoming staff. With an extensive, varied and creative menu, the venue is renowned for its delicious food options, with a particular focus on generous gluten-free and vegan selections that cater to different dietary needs. We pride ourselves on our wide range menu items with all meals and components prepared in-house from our skilled team of chefs using locally sourced and fresh ingredients.

East Avenue Espresso Cafe is looking for a passionate and reliable SOUS CHEF to join our kitchen team. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and will be able to support the Head Chef in leading and managing the kitchen.

As Sous Chef at East Avenue Espresso Cafe, you will be responsible for:

Assisting the Head Chef in overseeing all kitchen operations.
Managing food ordering and maintain appropriate stock levels.
Monitoring stock control and minimising waste.
Overseeing all food preparation/cooking, including quality and presentation control.
Receiving, inspecting and checking all deliveries to ensure quality and accuracy.
Supervising, supporting and motivating the kitchen team during service, including delegation of tasks and responsibilities.
Training and developing junior kitchen staff to ensure proper culinary techniques and processes at all times.
Work closely with the Front of House (FOH) team to ensure smooth communication and excellent customer service.
Menu development and costings and creating new menu ideas.
Ensuring compliance to all regulations, food safety standards & WHS requirements
Stepping up and taking full responsibility for kitchen operations in the absence of the Head Chef.

This is a full-time role with a salary of $80,000-$85,000 per year.

To be eligible for the Sous Chef position, we are looking for:

Trade qualifications
Previous experience as a Sous Chef or in a similar leadership role. (Minimum of 2 years of experience preferred.)
Experience in a similar venue and with similar cuisine/menus - experience with Greek cuisine is highly desirable.
Experience in menu/recipe development.
Familiarity with gluten-free, vegan and other dietary requirements and experience with gluten-free cooking.
Someone who stays calm under pressure and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.
Great communication and teamwork skills.
Strong knowledge of kitchen operations, food safety, and stock management.
Comprehensive understanding of WHS requirements.
Ability to supervise and train junior kitchen staff.
A positive attitude and a willingness to lead and support the team.
