Primary objective
Provide effective and efficient Orthoptic and Ophthalmic care for both adult and paediatric clients in conjunction with the
Ophthalmologists and Registrars at Royal Darwin Hospital and throughout the Top End Hospital Network.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide ophthalmic diagnostic services, Orthoptic assessments and treatment with an emphasis on children’s vision and

eye movement disorders.
2. Take part in outreach programme.
3. Support an environment that promotes professional development and the provision of a quality service that may include

providing teaching to nursing staff in the Eye Clinic and throughout the hospital.
4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
5. Perform some administration duties.
6. Supervision and teaching of Orthoptic students.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Bs Applied Science (Orthoptics) or equivalent, as recognised by Orthoptics Australia.
2. Experience working within the field of ophthalmology.
3. Advanced clinical competencies with the ability to perform a wide range of diagnostic tools (HVF, OCT, Fundus Camera,

IOL Master, Autorefractor, Lensometer) and gain accurate measurements.
4. Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively within a

multidisciplinary team in a cross-cultural environment.
5. Proven ability to manage own workload and assist others should the need arise.
6. An enthusiasm for improving current systems and practices.
7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

Desirable
1. Knowledge of and experience using NT Health information systems.
2. Eligible to obtain Northern Territory driver’s licence prior to commencement.
