This position is listed as 0.4 FTE, however the days and hours of attendance will be negotiable with the successful applicant.
The Science Laboratory Technician provides high-level technical, operational and safety support to the Science Learning Area to enhance student learning outcomes across Years 7-12.
The role supports the preparation, delivery and evaluation of practical science programs by working collaboratively with teaching staff to design, trial and prepare experiments, manage laboratory operations, and ensure compliance with Department of Education and WorkSafe Victoria requirements.
Operating with a high degree of independence, the Science Laboratory Technician exercises judgement and discretion in the coordination of laboratory systems, chemical management, and safety procedures.
Curriculum and Teaching Support

Collaborate with science teachers to plan, design and trial practical activities aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and VCE study designs.

Prepare materials, chemicals and equipment for practical classes across all year levels.

Assist in the development of risk assessments for laboratory activities and procedures.

Demonstrate correct and safe use of laboratory equipment when required.
-
Provide technical advice to staff regarding laboratory processes and safety requirements.

Support student practical investigations including resolving technical issues where appropriate during contracted work hours
Laboratory Operations and Resource Management
-
Maintain laboratories in a clean, organised and safe condition.
-
Coordinate ordering, receipting and storage of chemicals, equipment and consumables.
-
Maintain accurate chemical registers and ensure Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are current and accessible.
-
Conduct regular stocktakes and monitor consumable usage.
-
Implement and maintain safe storage, handling and disposal systems in accordance with DE and WorkSafe Victoria requirements.

Conduct laboratory safety checks as directed by OH&S requirements and officers.
-
Maintain and repair equipment where feasible and arrange servicing when required.

Oversee security of laboratory spaces, materials and equipment.

Administration and Systems

Maintain accurate laboratory databases, inventories and documentation.

Plan and organise workflow to meet curriculum and assessment timelines.

Liaise with suppliers and manage purchasing processes in accordance with school policy.

Support Science faculty meetings as required.

Assist in preparation of science displays and activities for school events and community engagement programs.

Other duties as directed by the Principal.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
-
Diploma of Laboratory Technology or equivalent qualification (or above) and/or relevant experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of chemical storage, laboratory safety and risk management requirements.

Experience working in a laboratory environment (secondary school setting preferred).
Desirable:

Experience supporting VCE Science practical programs.
-
Current First Aid qualification.
