Details: We are currently advertising opportunities for both and Senior Witness Assistance Service (WAS) ASO6 and Witness Assistance Service (WAS) ASO5 roles.

The Witness Assistance Service (WAS) is an integral part of the ACT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). The team comprises professional and para-professional staff who act as a link between prosecutors and victims, witnesses, and their families in matters before the court.

WAS Officers provide frontline support throughout legal proceedings by explaining processes and decisions, facilitating referrals to external services, and providing emotional support. They also promote victims’ meaningful participation in the criminal justice process. The WAS team recognises that criminal proceedings can be traumatic and isolating for victims of crime.

The Senior Witness Assistance Services Officer provides advanced support, guidance, and coordination of services to complainants and witnesses involved in the criminal justice process. The role ensures witnesses are informed, supported, and appropriately prepared for court proceedings while maintaining a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and victim-centred approach.

Eligibility/Other requirements: Essential

Demonstrated experience in provision of case management in trauma related areas such as child sexual assault, adult sexual assault, domestic violence and grief and loss.
The successful candidate/s will be required to produce a current National Police Check
Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra (act.gov.au)

Highly Desirable

Tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, counselling, criminology, human services or a related discipline.

Notes: Selection may be based on application and referee reports only. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
