The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Prison Supervisor, to provide a critical role within Melbourne Assessment Prison.

About the Business Unit

Corrections Victoria (CV) operates Victoria's adult prison, post-sentence and community corrections systems. Its vision is for Safer Prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities. Corrections Victoria's mission is to create a safer, smarter system with a skilled and supported workforce, that enables people in our care to make better decisions. We take a modern approach to correctional services, providing people with best practice interventions to reduce their risk of reoffending. All of our work supports community safety.

The Melbourne Assessment Prison Precinct (MAP) is a maximum-security correctional facility located on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD. The Prison is the state's main reception prison, receiving prisoners directly from the Courts and Police and provides assessment and orientation services for all male prisoners received into the prison system. The MAP also operates the Melbourne County Court, Supreme Court and Supreme Court Appeals custody facilities, located on the corner of William and Lonsdale Streets in the CBD. These facilities manage both male and female prisoners of all security ratings, operating Monday to Friday. The location also manages the St Vincent's Hospital and St Augustine's Hospital, providing custodial liaison and coordination of all prisoner escorts attending the hospital from prison locations across the state. MAP also provides a custodial function at the Adult Parole Board and the Post Sentence Authority located at 50 Franklin Street West Melbourne.

About the Role

Some of your duties will include:

manage the day-to-day operational needs of accommodation and/or security areas
use strong communication, negotiation, problem-solving and leadership skills, along with sound judgement and confident decision making, to manage and supervise a team in delivering a range of correctional services within a multidisciplinary, rehabilitative environment.
oversee human resource functions including performance management, coaching, mentoring and the professional development of staff, as well as understanding occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements, legislative responsibilities, recruitment and training requirements
play an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing, and reviewing practice and procedures relating to the management and security of people in prison
actively lead working parties and reference groups, take responsibility for additional portfolios, participate in forums or committees and provide advice through written reports to senior management.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership within a correctional environment.
Demonstrated commitment to working with staff, people in prison, and other service providers to reducing re-offending.
Experience in correctional service delivery, including staff supervision, case management and operational security practices.
Knowledge of, and the ability to apply relevant legislation, policy and procedure relating to Corrections Victoria and the managemen t of its prison facilities.
Computer skills, including experience with the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn and use internal systems is highly desirable (e.g. PIMS, e-Justice, Centurion).

Qualifications/requirements

A full and current Victorian driver's licence or a minimum P2 driver's licence.
Completion of the Prison Officer Pre-service Training or a willingness to undertake and complete the provided Prison Officer Pre-Service Training is required.
Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) or similar (desirable).
Certificate IV Training and Assessment (desirable).
