The Department of Health plays a critical role in the Victorian health system and is responsible for shaping it to meet the health needs of all Victorians. We’re focused on
supporting Victorians to be as healthy as they can; whether through alerting them to seasonal risks like thunderstorm asthma, notifying them of contact with
communicable diseases, safeguarding their drinking water, developing the best health, wellbeing and care facilities in the world, being at the forefront of mental health and
wellbeing treatment or accelerating medical research. It’s all part of the way we partner with the community to help every individual lead a healthy life.

About the role:

The Environmental Public Health and Water team supports Victoria's Chief Health Officer Group in providing specialist expertise on the public health impacts of environmental hazards. The work is interesting and diverse and can involve dealing with unusual and unexpected or emerging environmental hazards and scenarios. The team comprises people with scientific, problem solving and conceptual and analytical skills and abilities. The team provides advice on risk management measures, policy options and complex environmental public health issues and works under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008, Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019, Safe Drinking Water Act 2003 and Safe Drinking Water Regulations 2025.

This position is responsible for providing advice on environmental public health issues, developing and implementing policies, supporting and/or co-ordinating the response to issues, investigations, incidents and emergencies, and for contributing to state and national level environmental health-related policies and guidelines. It also supports relevant national committees. The position also has Team Leader responsibilities.

About you:

Qualifications / Expertise:

A tertiary qualification in fields related to toxicology, environmental public health or health and environmental sciences is highly desirable.
Demonstrated knowledge of risks to human health from environmental hazards and expertise in risk assessment, risk communication and risk management.
