The NSW Department of Education is seeking a detail-driven, safety-conscious professional with construction industry experience to ensure major School Infrastructure projects meet statutory planning obligations.

You will conduct high-quality, timely environmental audits of sites and documentation, perform thorough inspections (erosion controls, waste management, hazardous materials, flora/fauna protection, noise/vibration, water quality), and provide post approval and compliance advice while staying current with legislation and policy. Collaborating with project managers, subcontractors, and stakeholders, you’ll identify and analyse compliance issues, recommend effective solutions, lead desktop reviews and state-wide site inspections, and contribute to business improvement, policy development, and ongoing training.

Key capabilities include White Card validation, strong organisational skills, proactive issue resolution, and the ability to maintain schedules and address on-site challenges.

About you

Demonstrated knowledge of NSW environmental legislation, including but not limited to, the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 1997 and the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.
Experience in construction environmental management or auditing.
Familiarity with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
Ensure high-quality and timely monitoring of projects against planning approval conditions and mitigation measures to meet statutory obligations and government policy objectives.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring high-quality customer service and collaborative success.
Ability to prepare high-quality and evidence-based audit reports and documentation, demonstrating attention to detail and strategic thinking.
Passion for supporting educational priorities and ready to lead initiatives to enable efficient and compliant delivery of NSW schools.
Offer expert post approval and compliance advice to project teams and stakeholders, ensuring adherence to relevant regulations and best practices.
Remain current on legislative changes and industry standards, ensuring that compliance practices are aligned with the latest requirements.
Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Essential requirements of the role

Tertiary qualifications in environmental science/management, engineering, planning, law or other relevant discipline and/or demonstrated equivalent experience.
Willingness to travel and a current and valid driver’s licence.
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.
