The Role

We’re seeking an experienced and detail-oriented professional to lead the delivery of information access services across Council. As the Senior Access to Information Officer, you will provide specialist advice on complex and sensitive matters, ensuring compliance with the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (GIPA Act) and privacy requirements.

In this role, you will assess and determine GIPA applications, including complex requests and review matters. You will review and allocate incoming applications, provide clear recommendations, and make sound decisions in line with legislation.

You will also support privacy-related work, including complaints, investigations, and data breaches, helping Council meet its legal obligations.

Working closely with internal stakeholders, you will provide practical advice and guidance to support best practice in information access, privacy, and open access.

This is a key role that supports transparency, accountability, and trust across the organisation and community.

Key Accountabilities:

Lead the assessment and determination of GIPA applications, including complex matters
Manage informal access requests and third-party consultations with accuracy and care
Deliver privacy outcomes, including reviews, complaints, investigations and data breach responses
Coordinate responses for external reviews (IPC, NCAT) and subpoenas
Maintain key resources such as the Agency Information Guide and Disclosure Log
Provide expert advice, training and support to staff on information access and privacy
Drive continuous improvement of processes to strengthen compliance and service delivery
Responsible for leading, promoting and overseeing Council’s proactive information release strategy, ensuring compliance with the GIPA Act and IPC requirements and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability.

What We Are Looking For

You will have:

Degree or diploma in Law, with admission as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of NSW and a current practising certificate
Experience in litigation, administrative law, or other relevant legal practice areas
Strong knowledge of GIPA, privacy legislation, and Australian Privacy Principles
Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide clear, expert advice on complex matters
Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines
Proven leadership capability, with the ability to mentor and support others while delivering high-quality outcomes

What We Offer

Salary from $105,288.40 to 121,992.35 per annum, plus 12% superannuation
Permanent full-time role (35 hours per week)
Enjoy flexible working options, including flexible start and finish times, hybrid work (after probation), and the option of a 9‑day fortnight by working additional hours across the fortnight
