Grenfell Public School P&C Association operates the school canteen Wednesday to Friday each week, throughout the NSW government school term, and on other scheduled days when required for in-school functions and meetings.
TITLE: Canteen Manager
HOURS FOR THIS POSITION: 15hrs a week*
WAGES: Level 3 Casual in accordance with the Fast Food Industry Award 2023, revised annually on July 1st.
As a paid employee of Grenfell Public School P&C Association, the Canteen Manager is answerable to the Canteen Sub-committee Team Leader of Grenfell Public School P&C Association.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Canteen Manager is responsible for the profitable management and operation of the school canteen according to the policies and procedures of Grenfell Public School P&C Association.
The Canteen Manager will support the development of strong relationships within the school community in particular with the students, parents and volunteers, teachers, and other school personnel.
The Grenfell Public School canteen’s aims and objectives are to; provide nutritious, hygienically prepared, filling and healthy food at an affordable and reasonable price, and to provide a varied and seasonally appropriate menu that will appeal to students.
The Canteen Manager will endeavour to support the NSW Department of Education Healthy Canteen Strategy, other than where flexibility in menu options is approved by the Canteen Sub-Committee. Menu options should always encourage healthy eating habits in our children.
The Canteen Manager is to submit a written report each month at the Grenfell Public School P&C Association canteen sub-committee meeting, and has the option of either attending the monthly general P&C meeting to present a report, or submitting a written report to the Grenfell Public School P&C Secretary to be read on the night.
The Canteen Manager has responsibility for authorising purchases/ordering necessary products and produce to deliver a menu in line with the Canteen policy. The Canteen Manager has responsibility for the management of the Canteen and direction of Canteen assistants and volunteers.
The Canteen Manager is responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the school canteen. This includes the following responsibilities:
· Planning, organising, and monitoring the day to day operations of the canteen, including but not limited to : the rostering of voluntary workers, daily record-keeping, opening and closing the canteen, preparation and cooking for service, operation of the shop front, money handling, cleaning of all areas of the premises other than floors, and ensuring all workers sign in and out;
· Preparation and service of recess and lunch food items for students and staff, including those that are pre-ordered and counter sale items, (Recess service is between 11 and 11:30, Lunch service is between 1 and 1:30pm);
· Utilising the My School Connect (or similar) application to access daily orders and to set up menu items and adjust pricing as necessary, as well as daily printing of order labels;
· Providing leadership to canteen employees and volunteers to ensure the delivery of an hygienic and affordable food service to the school community;
· Ordering, purchasing and checking all supplies against invoices and delivery dockets.
· Obtaining and providing to the P&C Treasurer, copies of all receipts and delivery dockets pertaining to food and supply purchases. Obtaining and providing to the P&C Treasurer banking deposit receipts;
· Use planning, food preparation and food handling skills to minimise waste;
· Induction and training of volunteers in food preparation and other procedures to deliver an affordable and safe food service to the school community;
· Ensuring that the products and services supplied by the canteen are marketed and promoted to generate a high level of sales on a daily basis;
· Ensuring that food product prices are monitored and value for money considered;
· Counting, recording and reconciling the daily takings.
· Maintaining a till float and banking the weekly takings at the end of each week;
· Ensuring that stock is kept at appropriate levels to avoid overstocking and also avoid running out if items, and that a stock take is undertaken at the end of each school year;
· Implement procedures and processes regarding food safety to ensure that correct food handling and hygiene practices are performed to prevent food spoilage, deterioration, contamination and subsequent safety risks or quality issues.
· Ensuring all canteen workers, including volunteers, are familiar with correct food handling and hygiene practices in line with the relevant legislation;
· Co-operate with the Grenfell Public School P&C Association, in organising the ordering, delivery and storage of items for special events being conducted by the P&C Association;
· Ensuring the health, safety and welfare of others in the canteen including undertaking a canteen risk assessment for hazards every term according to WH&S legislation;
· Security in the canteen such as money, keys, locking all doors and windows, switching off all appliances (except refrigeration units) and restricting entry to the canteen to only those who are authorised to be there;
· Ensuring that the cleaning incidental to the main function of the canteen is carried out daily (e.g. wiping down benches, cleaning of all equipment and fixtures) in accordance with the cleaning procedures set out in the food safety plan;
· Ensuring that the canteen is kept free of vermin, and that in the event of vermin gaining access to the canteen, extra cleaning is undertaken to remove all traces of their presence;
· Induction and training of daily and weekly cleaning duties to be carried out by canteen volunteers (e.g. wiping out of baskets)
· Logging maintenance issues and adhering to WH&S policies and procedures;
· Ensuring a pleasant working environment for the volunteers;
· Ensuring that all canteen volunteers are aware of the policy of the canteen sub-committee regarding food consumed by volunteers, i.e. a drink such as tea or coffee, a meat and salad sandwich or similar for lunch. Drinks from the refrigerator and hot food is to be paid for;
· Ensuring that the operation of the canteen is in line with the values of the school community following Grenfell Public Schools Respectful, Responsible, Resilient Learners Policy;
· Ensuring that students are treated with respect and dignity and feel comfortable in accessing the canteen, and should any issues arise, these will be immediately reported in writing to both the P&C Association President and the School Principal;
· Flexibility with occasional operation of the canteen for functions within school hours and outside of school hours (e.g. fete’s, disco’s, PPL Reward days, and/or when an outside organisation/business requests hire of the canteen as agreed by the principal and the canteen sub-committee). In such circumstances the Canteen Manager is to be paid at the same rate with no shift being less than 3.5 hours;
· Flexibility with operating the canteen off-site for school events such as Cross Country and Athletics Carnival, where prior set-up, operation and post event pack-up will be required. The Canteen Manager will be paid at their normal hourly rate for all extra hours undertaken for these activities;
· Applicants must have current driver’s license and access to their own car for shopping and banking purposes;
· Applicants must have current paid Working With Children Check and show any relevant information about their previous experience working with children;
· Applicants must have current Food Safety Supervisor Certification
