About the role
Mater has a fantastic opportunity for an Academic Fellow to provide a supervised consultative palliative care service, within Mater Hospital Brisbane (MHB) and Mater Cancer Care Centre (MCCC). This role is being offered on a maximum term, fulltime basis commencing February 2027 for a period of 12 months.
Mater Hospital Brisbane (MHB) is a level III (university) hospital with an active teaching program. MHB contains a 28-bed cancer ward for provision of integrated oncology, haematology and palliative care and a large ambulatory care facility.
The co-located Mater Private Hospital (MPHB) provides private inpatient oncology facilities and the Mater Research Institute, and provides research support. The Mater Cancer Care Centre (MCCC) offers a modern state-of-the-art facility that provides individually-personalised, comprehensive and compassionate care. The centre includes specialist suites, consultation rooms, cancer care treatment pods, palliative care, support programs and a specialised pharmacy, enabling a holistic approach to cancer care all from the one convenient location.
Salary: Commensurate with experience plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!
What you’ll be doing
In addition to participating in the consultative palliative care service and supporting our outpatient and in-patient services, our new team member will use their experience to teach, mentor and support palliative care junior medical and nursing staff across all sites, and contribute to departmental teaching activities and programs. This role also offers other opportunities; to contribute to and support existing clinical trials and initiate, design, conduct and report clinical trials within the Department of Palliative and Supportive Care, collaborating with Mater Research and UQ.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Deliver supervised specialist consultative palliative care services across Mater Hospital Brisbane and the Mater Cancer Care Centre.
- Support both inpatient and outpatient palliative care services.
- Assess, manage and coordinate care for patients with complex palliative care needs.
- Work collaboratively with medical, nursing and allied health teams to deliver patient-centred care.
- Teach, mentor and support junior medical officers, nursing staff and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Contribute to departmental teaching programs and educational activities.
- Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement and service development initiatives.
- Contribute to existing clinical trials and research projects in collaboration with Mater Research and The University of Queensland.
- Assist with the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of clinical research where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and participate in departmental meetings and professional development.
About you
You will be extensively trained in a relevant specialty with a passion for palliative care and oncology, and experience in mentoring and sharing experience with other staff. Your ability to work independently will aide your success, as will prior experience in research (though not a requirement). You'll be a motivated medical practitioner with a genuine passion for palliative care, education and improving patient outcomes. You'll thrive in a collaborative environment and be committed to ongoing learning, teaching and clinical excellence.
You will bring:
- Current registration as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA.
- Eligible for advanced training in a relevant specialty or meeting specialist training requirements.
- Demonstrated experience in palliative care, oncology and supportive care.
- Well-developed clinical assessment, communication and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience teaching, mentoring or supporting junior medical or nursing staff.
- Commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care.
- Research experience or an interest in clinical research is desirable but not essential.
- Strong organisational, time management and interpersonal skills.
