About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Community Safety and Prevention Officer to join our Community Partnerships and Inclusion team, within the Community Strengthening Department.

In this role, you will lead the planning, delivery and evaluation of evidence-based initiatives that prevent harm, improve perceptions of safety and strengthen community connection across Knox.

You will develop strong partnerships with community members, Council departments, Victoria Police, government agencies and community organisations to identify and respond to local priorities. You will also coordinate Council’s community safety and gambling harm-prevention policies, action plans, committees and associated governance processes.

Applying community development and public health approaches, you will use research, data and community insights to provide evidence-based advice, respond to emerging issues and support coordinated prevention and early-intervention initiatives. This will include developing accessible community education and awareness resources, implementing community connection initiatives and providing advice on relevant community safety and gambling harm prevention matters.

Reporting to the Coordinator Community Partnerships and Inclusion, you will join a collaborative and values-driven team working to create safer, healthier and more connected communities.

This is a permanent part-time role (0.6 EFT, 22.8 hours), primarily based at the Knox Civic Centre in Wantirna South. Knox supports flexible and hybrid working arrangements, while ensuring operational needs are met.

This is a Band 6 classified role. Remuneration will be $102,287.48 to $111,713.31, pro rata (depending on experience) plus superannuation in accordance with the Superannuation Guarantee.

What you will bring to this role

The key accountabilities, skills and experience for this role include:

A relevant tertiary qualification and demonstrated experience in community safety, gambling harm prevention, public health, community development or related field.

In-depth knowledge of community development, public health and evidence-based approaches to community safety, gambling harm prevention and related health and social issues.

Demonstrated experience planning, delivering and evaluating evidence-based policies, programs and projects while managing competing priorities, timelines and resources.

Strong partnership and community engagement skills, with the ability to build trust, influence outcomes and work effectively with diverse communities and stakeholders, including Victoria Police, government agencies, community organisations and internal Council teams.

Sound analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to use research, data, evaluation and community insights to identify priorities and provide clear, evidence-based advice and recommendations.

Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing professional reports, briefings, correspondence, presentations and accessible community education resources.

The ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, exercise sound judgement and respond effectively to emerging, complex or sensitive issues in a politically aware environment.

Sound knowledge of relevant policies, legislation and strategic frameworks, including municipal public health and wellbeing planning. Experience working in local government would be highly regarded.

Strong digital capability, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, databases and document management systems.
