Directly accountable to the Manager Adult Residential Withdrawal, the Registered Nurse provides safe, high-quality care within the scope of their practice in the assessment and management of clients in the residential withdrawal program.

The Registered Nurse will predominantly work within the residential withdrawal team but will liaise heavily with the admissions coordinator and be involved in preadmission clinics and clinical reviews to approve admissions.

Lead the nursing admission, treatment provision and discharge process ensuring clients have a safe and effective treatment intervention in Windana’s care.
Assess the client’s level drug and alcohol dependence and manage the clinical manifestations of the withdrawal.
Conduct a nursing physical assessment of the client noting any pre-existing medical conditions and their treatment and monitor these conditions throughout the clients stay.
Conduct a mental state examination of the client noting any pre-existing mental health comorbidities and seek referral to specialist intervention if the client becomes unwell while in withdrawal.
Work collaboratively with the Windana treating GP and the client’s own GP and any other specialist medical or psychiatric services engaged in the client’s care.
Facilitate any diagnostic investigations such as pathology and diagnostic imaging ordered by the medical officer or Nurse Practitioner.
Check the prescribed medications ordered by the medical officer or Nurse Practitioner and ensure that scripts and medication charts are provided to pharmacy in a timely manner for packaging and dispensing.
Administer medications according to the prescriptions and orders on the medication charts observing the clinical features and ensuring the medications are having the desired effect.
Evaluate responses to treatment and report any recommended changes to treatment plans and medications in a timely fashion to the treating doctor or Senior Nurse or Nurse Practitioner.
Engage collaboratively with the client to develop individually tailored treatment and recovery plans, involving nominated significant others where relevant.
Coordinate discharge plans and referrals to other service providers, ensuring discharge summaries are completed and provided to the client’s regular GP.

What we're looking for:
Proven experience working in a residential withdrawal setting, or an environment supporting clients with problematic alcohol, drug, or mental health issues.
Strong knowledge of the clinical manifestations of drug and alcohol withdrawal and clinical assessment tools used to measure progress in withdrawal.
Ability to support and work with vulnerable people and people with complex needs.
Applied understanding of contemporary standards and evidence-based practice and interventions in AOD context.
Experience in delivering group-based interventions.
Tech savvy with experience using client record management systems such as Mastercare, or similar client management systems.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with a natural ability to communicate effectively to a diverse group of people.
Bachelor’s Degree and completion of AOD Skillset
Ideally Post Graduate studies or training in mental health or AOD.
