## Position Overview

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Naval Architect / Marine Designer to join our team and contribute to the design, development, and structural integrity of a wide range of marine vessels and floating structures. The successful candidate will bring a strong technical foundation in naval architecture combined with practical experience across the full vessel lifecycle, from early-stage concept design through to construction oversight and post-delivery support. This role suits a detail-oriented professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about delivering innovative, safe, and efficient marine solutions.

## Key Responsibilities

- Lead the design and development of ships, yachts, and other marine vessels, producing detailed technical drawings, structural calculations, and specifications in accordance with applicable classification society rules and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with engineers, naval specialists, and project stakeholders to co-ordinate all aspects of vessel design, ensuring structural, mechanical, and systems requirements are integrated effectively across disciplines.
- Conduct hull form development and hydrodynamic analysis, including stability assessments, resistance and propulsion calculations, and seakeeping evaluations to optimise vessel performance.
- Carry out surveys of ships' hulls, superstructures, and onboard equipment, and undertake tonnage and freeboard measurements in compliance with relevant maritime conventions and flag state requirements.
- Prepare and review technical documentation including general arrangement plans, construction drawings, weight reports, and trim and stability booklets.
- Investigate structural faults, incidents, and vessel losses, including capsizing events, providing detailed forensic analysis and expert reporting for clients, insurers, or parties engaged in maritime litigation.
- Engage in research and development activities to advance design methodologies, materials selection, and construction techniques for both commercial and recreational marine applications.
- Provide technical support and guidance during the construction, conversion, and repair of vessels, liaising with shipyards and fabrication teams to resolve design queries and ensure quality outcomes.
- Assess and apply load conditions, fatigue analysis, and finite element modelling to evaluate the structural integrity of hulls and key structural components.
- Ensure all designs meet applicable safety, environmental, and classification standards, and support the preparation of documentation required for regulatory approval and certification.
- Contribute to project planning, cost estimation, and scheduling activities, identifying technical risks and supporting delivery within agreed timeframes and budgets.

## Required Qualifications & Skills

- Bachelor's degree or higher in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution.
- Demonstrated experience in naval architecture or marine design, with exposure to commercial shipping, offshore structures, or recreational vessel design.
- Proficiency in industry-standard design and analysis software such as Rhino, AutoCAD, ShipConstructor, Maxsurf, or equivalent tools.
- Sound knowledge of relevant classification society rules (e.g. DNVGL, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's Register) and international maritime conventions including SOLAS, MARPOL, and the Load Line Convention.
- Strong capability in performing hydrostatic, stability, and structural analyses, with the ability to interpret and apply results to design decisions.
- Familiarity with Australian maritime regulations and the requirements of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and liaise effectively with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- High level of attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
- Membership with, or eligibility for membership with, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or a comparable professional body is desirable.

## Preferred Qualifications

- Postgraduate qualifications in Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- Chartered status with the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or Engineers Australia.
- Experience in offshore, defence, or government-related maritime projects within an Australian context.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) software such as ANSYS or Abaqus.
- Exposure to sustainable vessel design practices, including alternative fuels, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction technologies.
- Prior experience providing expert witness or technical advisory services in maritime litigation matters.
