Full Job Description

About the Role:
As a Legal or Assessment Officer, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding the wellbeing of children and young people by processing and assessing blue card applications for people who have criminal histories or other assessable information. Your legal acumen and attention to detail will be crucial in assessing applications and providing sound advice based on the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000.

What You'll Do:
Assess blue card applications in the best interests of children
Conduct risk assessments and draft clear, evidence-based recommendations
Liaise with applicants and stakeholders, gathering and recording critical information
Provide clear legal and procedural advice to internal and external stakeholders
Manage case files efficiently and contribute to a high-performing, collaborative team
Contribute to a positive team environment and uphold our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion

What we're looking for:
Legal acumen and the ability to interpret and apply legislation, in particular the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000
Strong analytical and decision-making skills
Strong written communication, especially in drafting legal documents and reports
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and make informed decisions
A passion for safeguarding Queensland's children and young people

To be eligible for employment in this position, you must hold a university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate including graduate certificate and graduate diploma) from a recognised tertiary institution in one of the following disciplines:

Law
Social work
Human Services or social welfare
Psychology or behavioural science

If your qualification is from an overseas institution, you are responsible for obtaining official recognition (see https://desbt.qld.gov.au/training/training-careers/osqrecognition). You will be required to provide this prior to engagement.
