What you will do as the Assistant Director

All duties are to be performed in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct, and upholding the APS Values, to achieve results in line with the ACCCs mission and goals.

Assistant Directors work closely with Directors to lead and supervise teams on investigations, competition analysis and assist with conducting litigation in relation to anti-competitive conduct.

Training in competition provisions and division processes will be provided.

As the Assistant Director, you will:

Lead teams to identify and analyse relevant information to draw evidence-based conclusions on competition issues.
Prepare voluntary and compulsory information requests.
Lead interviews with witnesses, complainants and/or market participants.
Marshal relevant expertise from lawyers, experts, and other ACCC branches to develop analysis.
Develop, implement and review plans for the conduct of investigations and/or projects. Identify suitable resolutions for identified actions, changing market behaviours, activities and issues and provide recommendations to senior management.
Where relevant, prepare briefs to the CDPP for criminal cartel prosecutions.
Prepare for litigation in the Federal Court including drafting briefs for lawyers and counsel and obtaining witness statements.
Prepare administrative resolutions including to draft court enforceable undertakings.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships and professional networks with internal and external stakeholders.
Assist with leading and guiding the professional development of junior team members and contributing to the leadership of the branch.

About you

In order to succeed in the role, you will have:

All candidates are expected to meet the APS Integrated Leadership Profile (ILS) for the classification advertised. Follow the link for more information on the ILS. This role in particular requires:

Tertiary qualifications in economics, law, or similar fields.
A strong and demonstrated understanding of the competition provisions of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and other relevant legislation, or the ability to quickly acquire this.
Experience leading and managing investigations into complex matters and/or competition law issues in accordance with developed plans, and ensuring investigations are undertaken with established investigative principles.
Demonstrated ability to undertake objective, systematic analysis to draw accurate conclusions, critically assess and support evidence-based decision making (ideally in matters involving competition law analysis).
Strong written drafting skills and demonstrated experience in ensuring high quality documentation including staff papers, notices, correspondence, reports, minutes, and briefs.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Experience supervising and developing staff including by providing regular and appropriate feedback and direction and identifying development needs and opportunities.
Ability to foster successful internal and external stakeholder relationships.

Successful candidates will be expected to obtain Diploma in Government Investigations qualification within 12 months of commencing this role
