Primary objective
As a senior member of the school’s leadership team, the Assistant Principal plays a key role in leading the development,
implementation, and review of school plans, policies, and initiatives for the Bakewell Primary School community. The
Assistant Principal works collaboratively and positively with the school’s principal, leadership team, teachers, students,
community, and other stakeholders.
Context statement
Bakewell Primary School is a large Independent Public School located in Palmerston, committed to delivering excellence in
education with a focus on positive relationships and high expectation.
The school has a current enrolment of approximately 600 students from Preschool to Year 6, with about 18% identifying as
Aboriginal, 30% who have a language background other than English, and 15% who have English as an additional language
/ dialect and thus require support to develop English language proficiency.
Key initiatives at Bakewell Primary School include Explicit Instruction pedagogical practices, explicit and structured
frameworks for both Literacy and Maths, and School Wide Positive Behaviour. Collaborative planning in teaching teams is
strongly embedded, and students have high access to digital technology devices to enhance their learning.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. In collaboration with the executive leadership team, provide leadership in the development, implementation, and review
of school plans, policies, and initiatives.
2. Lead school improvement initiatives.
3. Participate collaboratively and positively as a member of the school’s Leadership Team.
4. Support teachers and students with student behaviour, regulation and wellbeing
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive current experience and proven abilities in urban primary school teaching with strong knowledge of how
students learn, the principles and elements of Explicit Instruction, as well as positive behaviour approaches.
2. Extensive experience as an effective leader in large urban primary schools, as well as strong and current knowledge
relating to effective leadership.
3. Demonstrated ability to build capacity of teachers, effectively lead teams, and to modify approaches to suit different
people and situations.
4. Proven experience in leading the development, implementation, and review of school plans, policies, and initiatives.
5. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate
effectively with colleagues, parents, students and the wider community.
