The ICU term at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) provides an outstanding opportunity for junior doctors to gain experience in the management of critically ill patients within a major tertiary referral and trauma centre.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, trainees are involved in all aspects of critical care, including the assessment, resuscitation, treatment and ongoing management of patients with life-threatening medical, surgical and traumatic conditions. Under the supervision of experienced Intensive Care Consultants and senior trainees, doctors develop skills in clinical decision-making, advanced monitoring, ventilatory support, haemodynamic management and complex patient care.

RNSH cares for a diverse and high-acuity patient population, providing exposure to major trauma, neurosurgical, cardiothoracic, medical and surgical intensive care. This broad case mix creates an exceptional learning environment for doctors seeking to strengthen their acute care and procedural skills.

What you'll be doing

This position is appropriate for medical officers (PGY 4 and above) who are interested in training in intensive care medicine. Trainees will either be registered with, or in the process of applying to, the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). The position is suitable for trainees at all stages of their training and based on clinical experience and level of training, the ICU will then determine the most appropriate clinical role to align with the units’ operational requirements and trainees’ requirements. Details provided below as applicable.

The purpose of the position is to provide effective clinical management and excellent care to critically ill patients under the supervision of an Intensive Care Specialist. Trainees will be expected to develop expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment, and to participate in the core training program of the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

To be employed by NSW Health, applicants must provide evidence of vaccination and comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive (PD2024_01. Compliance with this policy, including any amendments made from time to time, is a mandatory condition of employment.

Applicants will be required to provide acceptable evidence of their vaccination status, immunity, and any other occupational health requirements relevant to the position. Evidence must be submitted and assessed in accordance with NSW Health requirements prior to commencement.

This position requires a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by Service NSW. A current and valid WWCC is a mandatory requirement for appointment to this role.
