Gym Operations Manager

1UP Bouldering | Chullora, Sydney

Part-time | Approximately 21–30 hours per week. Opportunity to progress to full-time

$60,000 p.a. (full-time equivalent) plus superannuation

About 1UP Bouldering

1UP Bouldering is a large indoor bouldering gym in Chullora. We are working to build a gym that is welcoming, safe, clean, well maintained and professionally operated.

We are looking for a capable and hands-on Gym Operations Manager to help lead daily operations, supervise staff and maintain consistently high standards throughout the facility.

This is not a desk-based management role. The successful candidate will be actively present throughout the gym, directing staff, serving customers, cleaning, restocking, completing inspections and resolving operational issues.

Climbing experience is welcomed but is not essential. Strong operational or supervisory experience from retail, hospitality, leisure, recreation, health, fitness or another customer-facing environment is highly valued. Applications from experienced retail, hospitality and customer-service supervisors or managers who are new to climbing are encouraged.

Employment arrangement

This position will initially be offered on a part-time basis for approximately 21–30 hours per week.

The successful candidate must be available to work a regular combination of weekday day and evening shifts. The precise regular working pattern will be agreed before commencement and may vary based on staffing and gym requirements

Additional hours may be offered from time to time by agreement.

There is an opportunity for the position to progress to full-time employment if the employee performs strongly, the working relationship is successful. Progression to full-time is not automatic and would be agreed and documented separately.

The role

Working closely with the Directors, the Gym Operations Manager will help take ownership of the gym’s day-to-day performance.

Key responsibilities include:

supervising daily gym operations;
maintaining excellent cleanliness, presentation and customer-service standards;
opening and closing the facility;
allocating work to staff and checking that tasks have been completed properly;
assisting with the preparation and administration of staff rosters;
managing retail stock, cleaning supplies and operational consumables;
responding to customer questions, complaints and membership issues;
completing safety, facility and climbing-area inspections;
identifying, isolating and reporting hazards;
tightening loose holds and completing other authorised basic climbing-related maintenance;
maintaining incident, maintenance, cleaning and operational records; and
supporting membership sales, retention and overall customer experience.

About you

You take ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do. You notice when something is dirty, unsafe, disorganised or incomplete and take action.

You will ideally have:

previous supervisory, team-leader, assistant-manager or manager experience;
experience in retail, hospitality, leisure, recreation, fitness or another high-volume customer environment;
a demonstrated ability to hold staff accountable and maintain operational standards;
strong reliability, punctuality and personal organisation;
confidence allocating tasks and following up on incomplete work;
excellent customer-service and conflict-resolution skills;
practical problem-solving ability;
confidence using rostering, point-of-sale and general business systems;
strong written communication and recordkeeping skills;
willingness to personally undertake cleaning and practical operational work;
availability across weekdays and evenings; and
the ability to perform the physical requirements of an active gym role.

The following would be advantageous:

experience managing a gym, recreation centre or similar facility;
bouldering or indoor-climbing knowledge;
current first-aid and CPR certification;
experience with basic facility maintenance;
stock-control or retail-merchandising experience; and
experience managing casual or junior staff.

What success looks like

The successful person will create shifts where:

staff remain active, productive and customer focused;
cleaning and operational tasks are completed properly;
hazards and maintenance issues are addressed promptly;
customers receive friendly and professional service;
rosters and stock are well organised;
standards remain consistent even when the Directors are not present; and
problems are identified and resolved rather than passed on.

Hours and remuneration

Approximately 21–30 hours per week.

The regular days and working times will be agreed with the successful candidate. Evening availability is required.

$60,000 p.a. (full-time equivalent) plus statutory superannuation, penalty rates and applicable entitlements.

Pay: $60,000.00 per year
