Permanent Anaesthesia & Critical Care Veterinary Nurse

Western Australian Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (WAVES) is looking for an experienced Veterinary Nurse to join our team in a role primarily focused on anaesthesia and perioperative nursing.
If you have a strong general nursing background, enjoy the detail and physiology behind anaesthesia, and want the opportunity to develop more advanced anaesthesia skills while remaining involved in hands-on clinical nursing, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

Your primary role will be to support the delivery of anaesthesia and perioperative care across our multidisciplinary referral and emergency hospital. You'll work alongside our veterinarians, specialists and nursing teams across a diverse range of patients and procedures, from routine anaesthesia through to complex and critically ill patients.

While anaesthesia will be your primary focus, this is not a role removed from the rest of the hospital. When the anaesthesia caseload permits, you'll use your experience as a Veterinary Nurse to support patient care across the hospital, including assisting our Emergency and Critical Care team.

We see this as an important part of the role. It keeps you connected with general clinical nursing, provides variety, and means your skills and experience can contribute wherever patient care needs them most.

Key Responsibilities

Preparing patients and equipment for anaesthesia and procedures
Assisting with induction, maintenance and recovery from anaesthesia
Monitoring anaesthetised and sedated patients and maintaining accurate anaesthetic records
Recognising changes in patient parameters and responding appropriately in conjunction with the veterinary team
Providing high-quality perioperative nursing care
Preparing, maintaining and troubleshooting anaesthetic and monitoring equipment
Working collaboratively with veterinarians, specialists and nurses across the hospital
When the anaesthesia caseload permits, assisting with general nursing and the care and monitoring of hospitalised and emergency patients
Maintaining meticulous clinical records and ensuring continuity of patient care

What We're Looking For

A Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) who has worked in veterinary clinical practice for at least five years
Strong general veterinary nursing knowledge and clinical skills
Ideally competent and experienced in veterinary anaesthesia, patient monitoring and perioperative nursing
Comfortable caring for patients requiring a high level of monitoring and attention to detail
Able to recognise changes in a patient's condition and respond appropriately
Someone who enjoys anaesthesia but is equally willing to roll up their sleeves and help with general patient care when required
Strong communication skills and a team-focused approach
Motivated to continue developing their anaesthesia knowledge and technical skills
Someone who takes pride in excellent patient care and enjoys working as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team

Previous experience in a specialist, referral or emergency hospital is highly regarded but not essential.
