Overview

Together for Treaty is a community campaign to build public support and momentum for Treaties, truth-telling and First Nations justice. The campaign is coordinated by Common Threads - a First Nations led nonprofit organisation - and supported by a diverse alliance of community groups. In the role of Community Organiser, you will support the growth of the Together for Treaty volunteer network and create opportunities for people from all walks of life to take action. In 2026, this role will include a priority focus on building and demonstrating community support for Treaty and First Nations justice across Victoria in the lead-up to the state election.

Role Title: Community Organiser
Reports to: Common Threads Impact Manager, Alex Hill
Duration: Fixed term role of 12 months. Start date in August 2026, with some flexibility for the right candidate.
Salary: Level 4 or 5 of the Social, Community, Home Care & Disability Services
Award 2010 ($92,283-$105,570 depending on experience) plus 12% superannuation
Hours: Full time - flexibility required for travel and weekend work in peak periods.
Location: Ideally based in Melbourne, with flexibility for the right candidate

About Common Threads & Australian Progress

Common Threads is a new First Nations-led organisation, harnessing the power of First Nations leadership, advocacy and change-making to win transformative change. We are a team of campaigners, storytellers and community-builders - working in collaboration with First Nations communities across the country to build momentum for Treaties, truth-telling, climate justice and self-determination.

Common Threads is currently incubated by the Centre for Australian Progress and this position will be employed by Australian Progress. Australian Progress plays a unique role in building the capacity of social change organisations and movements to advocate and win. We are building a civil society where organisations and movements are capable, connected, innovative, and centring lived expertise to advocate and win systemic change.

Community Organiser Key Responsibilities

Coaching and mentoring volunteers, supporting both First Nations people and allies to build Together for Treaty action groups in their communities across the country
Coordinating and delivering training for volunteers to build their community organising and campaigning skills, both online and in-person
Leading recruitment and promotion for trainings, community events and mobilisations
Building strong relationships with First Nations organisations, community groups and alliance partners
Drafting campaign resources such as conversation scripts, guides for hosting events, door-knocking, etc.
Supporting with logistics and administration tasks, such as merchandise distribution

Key Selection Criteria

We’re looking for a community-builder with a passion for First Nations justice to scale up grassroots action in support of Treaty across Victoria and around the country.

Demonstrated community organising experience: You understand what it takes to bring people together, build effective teams, inspire collective action and develop the leadership of others. You have a strong understanding of community organising principles and experience in social change campaigns, either in a volunteer or paid capacity.
Strong written and verbal communication skills: You can write accessible and inspiring communications materials for a range of audiences, you’re a confident public speaker and can build strong relationships within diverse movements.
Training and facilitation experience: You have experience designing and delivering training (e.g. workshops and presentations), coaching, and developing leadership by giving and receiving feedback.
Campaigning skills and strategic thinking: You have a strong understanding of the Australian political and media landscape as it relates to movements for First Nations justice and social change (or you’re excited to learn in these areas).
Teamwork and adaptability: You’re a team player who is open to learning on the job, trialling new ideas, and giving and receiving feedback to grow. You don’t mind some repetitive tasks from time-to-time and you’re willing to adapt in light of emerging campaign opportunities.
Commitment to Common Threads’ values, including an interest in social change, a commitment to First Nations justice and experience working as part of or alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
