Get to Know Us
At Svitzer, keeping ports running and global trade moving takes more than crews on the water. Behind every safe towage job is a shore-based team making it happen. From operations and technical to planning, systems, and compliance - we rely on capable people who understand the importance of doing things properly. If you’re looking for meaningful work with a tight-knit team that backs each other - you’ll be in good company.
We're looking for a Technical & Operations Coordinator to join our Sydney team on a permanent full-time basis.
This could be a great opportunity if you're currently working as a technician, tradesperson, maintenance coordinator or in an early-career technical role and are looking to broaden your experience in shore-based marine operations.
You don't need to be a senior marine engineer or technical specialist. What we're looking for is someone with genuine practical technical understanding who can confidently work with vessel crews, tradespeople, contractors and suppliers to help keep our fleet safe, reliable and operational.
Why You’ll Want to Join Us
If you're looking for a role that combines technical coordination with hands-on operational support, this is an excellent opportunity to build your career with a global leader in harbour towage. You’ll split your time between the office and our vessels, collaborating closely with crews, contractors and technical stakeholders to help keep our fleet safe, compliant and operational.
You'll gain exposure to vessel machinery and systems, planned and corrective maintenance, surveys and compliance activities, procurement and technical projects while working closely with experienced marine and technical professionals.
For someone with a practical technical background looking to move into, or further develop, a shore-based career, the role provides an opportunity to build experience across fleet maintenance, technical coordination and marine operations within a global leader in harbour towage.
As our permanent full-time Technical & Operations Coordinator , you'll be based at Port Botany while supporting operations across both Port Botany and Port Jackson. You'll play a key role in coordinating vessel maintenance, contractor activities, procurement and compliance, while contributing to the reliability and performance of one of Australia's busiest harbour towage operations. In return, you'll enjoy ongoing development opportunities, exposure to a diverse range of technical projects and the chance to grow your career within the maritime industry.
How You’ll Make a Difference
Reporting to the Port Manager, your key responsibilities will include:
- Coordinating planned and critical vessel maintenance to maximise fleet availability and reliability.
- Managing the procurement of parts, consumables and safety-critical spares, from ordering through to receipting and inventory control.
- Working closely with vessel crews, contractors and suppliers to coordinate maintenance activities and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
- Supporting vessel surveys, certification and compliance activities to ensure statutory requirements are met.
- Maintaining accurate maintenance, purchasing and compliance records within our planned maintenance and safety management systems.
- Assisting the Technical Superintendent with technical projects, vessel changes and continuous improvement initiatives across the Sydney operation.
What You'll Bring
To succeed in this role, you'll bring:
- A technical background gained through a trade, marine, engineering or maintenance environment, or experience in a similar technical or operations coordination role.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, coordinate multiple activities and follow tasks through to completion.
- A practical, proactive approach to problem solving, with excellent attention to detail and a focus on delivering high-quality outcomes.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, enabling you to work effectively with vessel crews, contractors, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and the ability to learn maintenance, procurement and business management systems.
- A hands-on approach and willingness to regularly work across Port Botany, Port Jackson and aboard vessels to support operational requirements.
Experience in the maritime industry or with planned maintenance systems would be advantageous but isn't essential. If you've developed your technical experience in another industry and are interested in bringing those skills into the maritime environment, we'd still like to hear from you.
What We Offer
You'll join a close-knit Sydney team and a global organisation with a strong focus on safety, operational reliability and developing our people.
You'll have the opportunity to broaden your technical and operational experience, work closely with experienced marine professionals and build your career within the towage and maritime industry.
If you have the technical foundation, organisation and initiative we're looking for and are ready to take the next step in your career, we'd like to hear from you.
