Primary objective
As a member of the Territory Pathology, Alice Springs Hospital work team, positively contribute to the provision of a timely,
efficient, cost effective and high quality service to the Department of Health and public of the Northern Territory
Context statement
Operational needs require the recruitment of an individual with knowledge/skills in Chemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and
Blood Transfusion to work in the local Territory Pathology, Alice Springs Hospital work team, and participate in a 24hr x 7day roster
as required. In particular, applicants competent in the reporting of blood films would be highly regarded. The position maps to
CLF4/5 on the Northern Territory Public Sector Capability and Leadership Framework document.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Under minimal direct supervision, and as competencies develop, analyse pathology specimens in the Multi-disciplinary area
using a range of developing technical skills on a variety of laboratory analysers.
2. Under supervision as competencies are met, authorise results and provide appropriate advice,
3. Actively participate and develop knowledge of internal and external quality programs to ensure quality of results. As
competencies develop, perform equipment preventative maintenance, and monitor availability of reagents and consumables
in use and initiating ordering as required.
4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Education and Qualifications: Possession of a degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent is mandatory.
2. Work History: Previous work experience in pathology or other laboratory with analytical procedures and protocols closely
aligned to those in use in a Multi-disciplinary Pathology laboratory is highly desirable.
3. Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated ability to continue to develop the required skills and knowledge of the role and be an
active team member. Developing knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical factors impacting on the provision
of clinically useful results is also required. Developing awareness of monitoring stock levels in daily use to initiate ordering in
a timely manner.
4. Personal Qualities: Demonstrated ability to operate within boundaries, taking personal responsibility for completion of tasks
in a timely manner; acknowledging personal development needs and demonstrating a commitment to learning and self-
development.
5. Cultural Awareness: An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.

1. Accreditation: Knowledge of the requirements for NATA/RCPA Accreditation.
2. Safety: Knowledge of safe working practices in clinical laboratories.
3. Commitment: To developing a long-term career in a multidisciplinary regional pathology service.
