Learning Specialists: are instructional leaders who build teacher capability and improve student learning outcomes. They work alongside leaders, teachers and education support staff to strengthen effective and consistent practice. They support staff to use evidence to identify areas for improvement, support professional learning and collaboration and help embed responsive teaching practices across the school.
Provide strategic leadership of School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) to strengthen student engagement, wellbeing and learning across the College.
Lead the development and implementation of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) within the Phoenix context, including effective use of PCMS¿s.
Build staff capability to implement SWPBS consistently through professional learning, coaching, modelling and collaborative planning.
Lead the implementation of The Resilience Project (TRP) and ensure alignment to broader College engagement and wellbeing priorities.
Use SWPBS, TRP, Attitudes to School Survey and other relevant data sets to monitor implementation, identify areas for improvement and inform responsive action.
Work with students, staff, families, Department of Education training personnel and other stakeholders to continually strengthen the College¿s approach to positive behaviour and student engagement.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Work with the Principal Team and relevant School Improvement Team (SIT) to embed SWPBS practices consistently across the College and meet identified AIP priorities and milestones.
Lead the SWPBS team in the planning, implementation and review of the College¿s SWPBS framework, including expectations, teaching practices, acknowledgement systems and responses to behaviour.
Lead the development and implementation of tiered supports within the College¿s MTSS framework, including PCMS processes and interventions for students requiring additional support.
Oversee the effective use of Compass and other relevant systems to support SWPBS implementation, data collection, monitoring and evaluation.
Analyse behaviour, engagement, wellbeing and implementation data to identify trends, evaluate impact and determine areas requiring additional support.
Plan and deliver professional learning, coaching and targeted support for staff based on identified SWPBS implementation and student engagement needs.
Lead the implementation and evaluation of The Resilience Project, ensuring it complements the College¿s broader approach to engagement, wellbeing and positive behaviour.
Develop and maintain the policies, processes, resources and materials required to implement SWPBS and TRP with fidelity.
Work strategically with the College¿s SWPBS Coach and other Department of Education personnel to strengthen implementation and staff capability.
Identify improvement opportunities and undertake other tasks as delegated by the Principal.
Key Targets:
- Each Learning Specialist and Leading Teacher will develop and present annual key targets to members of PCO team. These targets will align with the College¿s Strategic Plan, Annual Implementation Plan, relevant SIT priorities and the responsibilities of the role.
In recognition of the importance of exemplary practice for improved student learning outcomes, the key roles of the Learning Specialists may include but are not limited to:
- Demonstrating high-level expertise in teaching and learning practice
- Modelling exemplary classroom practice including through teaching demonstration lessons
- Working with the school leadership team to develop a shared view of highly effective teacher practice
- Leading and modelling the implementation of whole-school improvement strategies related to curriculum planning and delivery
- Playing a key role in the provision of professional learning, including through developing processes and protocols for observation and feedback of teacher practice and peer collaboration
- Modelling effective learning practice and supporting teachers to seek, analyse and act on feedback and on their practice
- Providing evidence-based feedback to teaching staff to inform their effectiveness and development
- Providing expert advice about the context, processes and strategies that will shape individual and school professional learning
- Supervising and training one or more student teachers and mentoring and/or coaching teachers
- Modelling exemplary use of student data to inform teaching approaches
- Developing and promoting school-wide professional learning structures, processes and protocols through Professional Learning Communities
- Modelling exemplary professional learning practice included through seeking feedback from other teachers and leaders on their own classroom practice as part of critical reflection and inquiry to improve practice
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
