The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you’ll play a key role in leading the delivery of culturally appropriate legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. You will oversee complex criminal law matters, mentor legal teams, and drive operational excellence while strengthening community-focused advocacy and access to justice. Each day, you will:

Provide direct oversight of the Lismore and Coffs Harbour Crime Practices. This role will be based at the Lismore Office.
Lead the delivery of culturally appropriate criminal law services and oversee complex legal matters across Local, District, Children’s and Supreme Courts.
Supervise, mentor and support legal and administrative staff, including recruitment, training, performance development and workload management.
Coordinate daily legal operations, court schedules and resource allocation to ensure efficient and high-quality service delivery.
Support the implementation of policies, procedures and strategies that strengthen legal services and operational excellence across the practice.
Build strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, stakeholders and external legal representatives through advocacy, education and community engagement.
Ensure compliance with professional standards, legislation and workplace policies while contributing to a collaborative and culturally safe work environment.

Your Story & Strengths
You are a passionate and experienced legal leader with a strong commitment to delivering culturally appropriate legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Bringing expertise in criminal law, people leadership and advocacy, you thrive in fast-paced environments while mentoring teams, driving operational excellence and championing access to justice. Key strengths include:

A NSW Practising Certificate with a minimum of 4 years’ experience in criminal law advocacy and legal representation.
Strong understanding of and respect for Aboriginal cultural practices, with the ability to provide culturally appropriate legal support to clients and communities.
Proven leadership experience managing legal teams, workloads and daily operations within a fast-paced legal practice.
Sound knowledge of criminal law legislation, court procedures and experience representing Aboriginal clients in criminal matters.
Exceptional communication, negotiation and people management skills, with the ability to mentor staff and build strong stakeholder relationships.
Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and uphold workplace health, safety, ethical and diversity standards.
