The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the ACFAS team, you'll support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families through culturally safe legal advice, advocacy and representation in Care & Protection and family law matters. Through early intervention, outreach and community engagement, you'll help create stronger outcomes for children, families and communities. Each day, you will:
- Provide early intervention legal advice, representation and advocacy in Care & Protection and family law matters for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- Conduct casework including legal research, preparation of matters, court appearances, and maintenance of accurate files and records.
- Deliver community legal education, outreach, and stakeholder engagement, including participation in early intervention activities.
- Maintain strong cultural competency and client-focused communication, supporting clients who may be distressed or experiencing complex legal issues.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external agencies, including making referrals and contributing to interagency relationships and service coordination.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, ALS policies and procedures, while maintaining.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated legal advocate who understands and respects the cultural, social, and historical context that shapes the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You bring both technical excellence and a deep commitment to community and justice. Key strengths include:
- A NSW Practising Certificate with a minimum of 4 years' experience in Care & Protection/Family Law.
- Strong understanding of child protection law, contemporary practice, procedures and commitment to social justice principles.
- Demonstrated cultural competence and respect for Aboriginal communities, with the ability to deliver culturally appropriate legal services.
- Excellent legal skills including written and verbal communication, legal research, analysis, problem-solving and sound judgement.
- Proven ability to manage a complex and varied workload independently and within a team, meeting deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
- Willingness to be based in regional NSW (Dubbo or Moree), travel across the region, and hold a current unrestricted NSW driver’s licence.
