The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact
The purpose of this role is to lead the Employment and Discrimination Law service within the Civil Law Practice, delivering high‑quality, culturally safe and trauma‑informed civil law support across NSW. The role strengthens an emerging practice area, manages a multidisciplinary team and drives service excellence across sexual harassment, racial discrimination and intersecting civil law needs. Each day, you will:

Design and deliver culturally safe civil law services across employment, discrimination and intersecting areas, including advice, representation, education and new service models.
Provide specialist legal practice leadership through high‑quality advice, trauma‑informed approaches and representation at meetings, forums and sector events.
Strengthen case management and decision‑making systems by monitoring service delivery, maintaining reporting standards and establishing effective guidelines and processes.
Drive operational excellence and program support through policy input, advocacy contributions and strong practice management across systems, supervision and service models.
Build collaborative relationships and community connections by working with partners, respecting cultural practices and engaging with stakeholders across NSW and the ACT.
Lead and support multidisciplinary teams through clear communication, supervision, performance management, workload oversight and other duties as required.

Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated leader who brings deep cultural understanding and respect for the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. With strong technical expertise and a commitment to culturally safe, trauma‑informed practice, you help shape high‑quality civil law services that make a real difference. Your leadership strengthens community outcomes and drives justice with integrity and heart. Key strengths include:

A NSW Practising Certificate with a minimum of 4 years' experience in civil law expertise, including employment and discrimination law, litigation, and briefing Counsel in complex matters.
Lead and supervise a remote junior team with capacity to travel for face‑to‑face guidance, staff development and practice oversight.
Deliver high‑quality civil law services to Aboriginal clients with strong cultural understanding, trauma‑informed practice and respect for community needs.
Manage day‑to‑day legal operations independently including supervision, workload management, performance reviews, community engagement and education.
Apply strong analytical, communication and organisational skills to meet deadlines, adapt to a start‑up environment and manage diverse priorities.
Meet operational and compliance requirements including a valid driver’s licence, travel capacity, and Working with Children/Vulnerable People checks.
